After five rounds the sides have played outstanding football to occupy
the top two places on the ladder.
Last Saturday, Brighton was too good for Mitcham at Mitcham, winning by 52 points.
Sam Venning, James Wray and Dylan Lang were among the best, while Jack Juniper was excellent in attack with seven goals.
Todd Johnstone also had an impact with three goals.
Flinders Park had to work hard to edge out Portland in their game at Flinders Park.
The Reds won 19.15 (129) to 15.10 (100) after trailing by 10 points early in the last quarter.
Ben George, Geordi Haklar and Daniel Blythe led the way, while Andrew Ainger (five goals) was among 12 goal kickers for his side.
A top exhibition is on the cards here with Brighton’s home advantage possibly a key by 10-24
points.
Golden Grove is home to SMOSH West Lakes with both sides looking to enjoy that winning
feeling again.
The Kookaburras looked good for a half when they led by 29 points against Seaton Ramblers before losing by 24 points.
Judd Morris led the way with three goals, with Ben Bamford (two goals) and Jake Pitman among the best.
SMOSH West Lakes just missed breaking through for its first win of the season when it lost to Walkerville by a point at home.
The Lions trailed by 15 points at the last change before their late rally. Cohen Mattner, James Watt and Nathan Brown were best for the Lions.
At home the Kookaburras can win by 20-36 points.
Seaton Ramblers and Westminster Old Scholars is another even match up at Pedlar Reserve.
The sides are third and fourth on the ladder and both have played good football so far.
Last week the Rams produced a strong second half to beat Golden Grove by 24 points with Jarrad Brusnahan, Luke Rochester and Anthony Laudato (four goals) among the best. Westminster OS beat Plympton by 17 points after trailing at each change.
Scott Blesing (two goals), Matthew Newman and Rhys French led the way.
The Rams look to have a good spread of attacking options to win by 18-34 points.
Portland hosts Plympton in another intriguing match to assess.
Coach Mark Moody was impressed with his side’s effort.
“That was the best I have seen them play for 12 months,’’ he said.
“The scores do not reflect how close the game was. We have four senior players to come back in to the mix so we will go in confident.’’
Brett Prior (four goals), Alex Bradley (four goals) and Troy Wilkey (two goals) led the way. Plympton’s best in its loss to Westminster OS were Stuart Taverner, Max Scott and Tim Dunkley. Portland looks good by 24-38 points.
Walkerville and Mitcham will occupy eighth and ninth on the ladder respectively when they meet at Walkerville.
Last week the Cats saw good games from Thomas Daly, Sean Kuerschner and Adam Law in their one-point win against SMOSH West lakes, while Mitcham was no match for Brighton with Lachlan Hall, Dennis McEvoy and Joshua Wills playing well. The Cats by 14-28 points at home.
