Fifth-placed Gepps Cross (10 competition points), Edwardstown (nine), Colonel Light Gardens and Salisbury (eight) head into the final seven games of the season in the thick of a fight for the last spot in the five.
Further back Smithfield and Hectorville mathematically remain in contention for a top-five spot but would need to produce a special finish in the run home.
Kilburn’s win over Morphettville Park last weekend opened up a two-win buffer between fourth and fifth, making it more likely the remaining teams will be battling for one spot.
Gepps Cross can stay ahead in the race for fifth when it visits ninth-placed Smithfield on Saturday.
The Rams got over the top of Colonel Light Gardens by two points in a thriller last round.
Gepps reeled in a 22-point half-time deficit to return to the top five.
Brett Siebert was best as the Rams recorded their fifth win of the season.
Gepps Cross leapfrogged Edwardstown on the ladder after the Towns lost to Eastern Park by 27 points at home.
Edwardstown face another tough task this weekend, visiting Morphettville Park.
The Roos have dropped three of their past four – including a 26-point defeat at the hands of Kilburn last weekend – to be at risk of dropping from the top three.
Morphies remain just percentage clear of the Chics after dropping games to the three sides around them on the ladder.
Meanwhile, Colonel Light Gardens will aim for its second win in three outings as it fights to stay in the top-five race.
The Lions ran out of puff against Gepps and missed a chance to climb into the five.
They come up against Salisbury this weekend in a must-win clash.
Both sides sit on four wins and the loser will face an uphill battle to feature in the finals.
In other games, North Haven will look to continue its unbeaten run against in-form Kilburn.
The Chics have won three of four to emerge as a top-three threat, while the Magpies are 11-0.
North comfortably accounted for Salisbury by nine goals last weekend.
Second-placed Eastern Park and last-ranked Hectorville close out the round at Dwight Reserve.
