ALDINGA Sharks’ next opponent has called on a famous Port Adelaide name to quell player nerves before Saturday’s highly-anticipated clash with the embattled club.
An O’Sullivan Beach-Lonsdale official this week emailed Jenny Williams — a sports psychologist and the sister of Power premiership coach Mark Williams — for advice on how to mentally prepare for the game, which has made national headlines because of Hawthorn champion Shane Crawford’s footy comeback with the Sharks.
Aldinga enters the Southern Football League match winless and on the bottom of the ladder, having lost its first six games this season by an average 167 points.
The Lions also have not won a game this year and have become concerned for the consequences of losing to a team dubbed one of the worst in Australia.
Williams said she spoke to O’Sullivan Beach-Lonsdale players at training last night about dealing with anxiety, remaining calm on the field and staying positive.
“Once you run out, you want to be calm, you want to be focused and looking forward to having the best game,” Williams said.
“Most of them will be out of their comfort zone by a long way, so the idea is for me to help them stay in their zone and identify things to make them better players.”
Williams said she gave the players notes to read and Youtube clips to watch.
“This is not about intending to come in as a white knight — that’s what Shane can do, he’s on a field — it’s about making these young guys better and giving them ideas to practice so they come away in six months better footballers,” she said.
Lions president David Schultz said his team was “definitely looking forward to the day”.
“They’re nervous and rightfully so because there’s going to be TV (crews) there,” Schultz said.
“We’re going to send out our best 21 players so hopefully they get the job done on the day and Jenny can help the guys out mentally.”
