A 150m zip line will be the key attraction as AFL fans are treated to a four-day festival in Adelaide for the league’s inaugural Gather Round.
The Pepsi Max Footy Festival was unveiled by the AFL and South Australian government on Tuesday, with two host sites at Elder Park and Pinky Flat, on the banks of the River Torrens in Adelaide.
Footy fans will be able to race each other over the 150m flying fox, running from the festival area to the other bank of the river by the Adelaide Oval.
The festival is free entry and will feature live music and entertainment, along with food trucks, licensed bars and big screens showing the AFL games.
Senior AFL executive Kylie Rogers said the Gather Round festival, which will run from Thursday April 13 to Sunday April 16, will be a joyous celebration of the sport for fans.
“In partnership with the South Australian Government, we are thrilled to be welcoming footy fans to the Pepsi Max Footy Festival,” Ms Rogers said.
“More than 150,000 fans are expected to attend Gather Round matches. Every South Australian will be able to join the festivities at the live sites.
“We are proud to bring the best of both the AFL and local SA vendors to provide four days of free activities for footy fans of all ages to soak up the atmosphere of Gather Round.”
Entertainment will also be brought to the nine games scheduled for across Adelaide during the festival, with Peking Duk to perform at Thursday night’s opening game between Adelaide and Carlton, and The Veronicas to play on Saturday before Port Adelaide takes on the Western Bulldogs.
“The AFL is proud to have an incredible line up of award-winning artists in The Veronicas and Peking Duk along with six of the best Aussie DJs entertain fans as part of our Gather Round celebrations,” Ms Rogers said.
“Not only do we have a host of amazing matches for fans to get excited about, but we have heaps of free family friendly activities that fans of all ages can enjoy, so we hope to see as many people there to soak up the atmosphere.”
