The Crows finally opened a box of beer they’d been sitting on all season and captain Rory Sloane called all the staff together in the rooms to toast their first victory last week before they immediately began plotting to win their second.
Brodie Smith told The Lowdown podcast the inner sanctum at Adelaide Oval was a special place after they beat the Hawks last Tuesday, which ended a 13-game losing streak under new coach Matthew Nicks.
“We certainly haven’t taken any drums to any games in anticipation this year, but we had a bit of carry on, I think we were approaching 400 days between wins, and we realise 1-13 still isn’t great but we still (enjoyed it),” Smith said.
“We’ve had a few (beers) there hoping we’d get a win for a couple of milestone games and obviously we haven’t been able to do that, so it was good to get in the locker room and have a quiet one with all the boys.
“A few young guys had their first win, so it was good to see the smile on their faces.
“We struggled to get it (team song) going, it was a bit all over the place, some of us didn’t know if we were allowed to link arms and we were pretty keen to get Gatorade on Nicksy so it was good to have him in the middle.
“His message was just to enjoy it, it’s been a tough year and we’ve been around the mark a couple of times and not been able to get it done.
“And after the song Sloaney got all the staff in and thanked everyone for the tough year that it’s been and wanted to make sure everyone was part of the win, not just the players, and it was great to see the joy on the young players’ faces and for us senior guys it was a bit of relief.
“Then we were back in to work to finish the year really strong, hopefully.
“As soon as we got back into the club it was back to business and we have spoken about that – let’s not just win one and fall back into some poor form, let’s put together three more solid games, three wins would be ideal, but we’ll focus on the Giants and if we can take some momentum into the off-season that would be great.”
The Crows host GWS at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday night, which will feature Sam Jacobs’ first game against his old club and emerging ruckman Reilly O’Brien.
“It’s going to be great,” Smith said.
“We did predict that Sauce would be coming in, they’ve played a few games and been on a short break and earlier in the year they were rotating Mummy (Shane Mumford) and Sauce.
“It will be good to see the big fella and the apprentice versus the master from the last couple of years gone, so I know Rob is really excited to go up against Big Sauce.”
