Great-grandson of Redlegs champion Walter Scott says club can win back-to-back premierships
THE great-grandson of Redlegs champion Walter Scott believes the club can once again win back-to-back premierships.
WADE Leaney fondly remembers the days when he would visit his great-grandfather - Redlegs champion Walter Scott.
"When I was younger my mum and I used to visit Wacka at Burnside - we'd go every couple of months," Mr Leaney says.
"He was always watching the footy and he always said the game then had got too quick and back in his day they wore proper footy boots with the big leather strap."
Triple Magarey Medallist Scott played for Norwood in four premierships, including the last time the club won consecutive flags in 1922-23.
"I always used to ask to look at his Magarey medals," Mr Leaney, 45, says.
"I played footy in primary and high school … he was a good role model for me."
Mr Leaney, of Hectorville, attends as many games as possible to support the club his great-grandfather loved dearly.
He believes the Redlegs can go back-to-back on Sunday.
"I think Nathan Bassett has done a great job and I can't see why they can't go back-to-back," he says.
Scott, who was known for his dodging and weaving, was named the club's best and fairest a record six times, spent five years as captain-coach and another two as coach.
He played 38 consecutive State games and also coached West Adelaide, Glenelg and Sturt.
