The Gold Coast Suns have issued an apology after the AFL club had its social media accounts hacked.

The Queensland club posted a statement on X on Tuesday morning explaining club officials had been locked out of the club’s Meta accounts with Facebook and Instagram.

In a totally bizarre saga, the club’s official Facebook page, which has 115,000 followers, was flooded with memes and random video content that included a post featuring penguins from the animated ‘Happy Feet’ film.

Posts went viral as fans chuckled about the unusual content appearing in their social media feeds.

There were also many fans recognising instantly that the club had been compromised.

As first reported by Code Sports, the Brisbane Lions also cheekily commented: “Blink twice if you guys need help Gold Coast Suns”.

The first of the rogue posts on the Suns’ official account appeared on Monday night and the problem was still yet to be resolved on Tuesday morning.

The football club explained the situation in a post shared on X.

“The club is aware of the current issues with its Meta account and is working to rectify the situation,” the Suns said.

“Please note that any post made at this time is unauthorised and we apologise for any inconvenience, harm or offence caused. The club will keep fans up to date.”

The fans did get a big update on Tuesday morning with star midfielder Matt Rowell saying he will remain with the club in 2026.

The former No. 1 draft pick was last month criticised when a secret meeting he held with Geelong officials in December became public knowledge.

It has previously been reported Collingwood was also preparing to lure Rowell away from the Gols Coast, but his one-word answer on Tuesday showed the contract saga may be a storm in a tea cup.

Quizzed on his future once again on Monday while speaking to Triple M Gold Breakfast, former AFL player and show co-host Peter “Spida” Everitt asked Rowell point-blank if he would be on the Gold Coast in 2026.

Rowell’s one-word reply?

“Yes.”

While the 23-year-old isn’t believed to have yet given his club of five years the same level of commitment just yet, his public response to the question does meet the current, internal expectation that we will stay a Sun for a long time to come.
