Glenelg sacks coach Kris Massie for 'under-performing' in the role
GLENELG Football Club has sacked coach Kris Massie.
GLENELG Football Club has sacked coach Kris Massie.
The former Carlton and Adelaide defender was told of the board's decision by president Nick Chigwidden this morning and the players were informed at 6pm.
The 33-year-old departs after leading the Tigers to a 17-33 win-loss record in two-and-a-half seasons after replacing Mark Mickan midway through 2011.
Glenelg this year slumped to its first wooden spoon since 2002 with a woeful 4-16 record, losing 12 consecutive games from rounds six to 21.
It won eight games, finishing sixth, in Massie's first full season in charge last year after he posted a 5-5 record in his role as caretaker coach following Mickan's axing.
Chigwidden said Massie, whose two-year contract had expired, was very disappointed by the decision but that the board felt he had "under-performed''.
"We just didn't get the results we thought we were capable of,'' Chigwidden said.
"We know we've got a young squad but there is talent there and we had a very disappointing year. We felt we under-performed.''
Massie's departure is the latest in a long line of 2013 SANFL coaches to either be sacked or announce they are quitting.
South Adelaide has parted ways with Ron Fuller and West Adelaide's Andrew Collins and North Adelaide's Josh Francou, who will join Sydney as a development coach, have announced they are leaving.
Norwood premiership coach Nathan Bassett has admitted he also is considering offers from AFL clubs for next year.
Chigwidden says Glenelg's new senior coaching role will go from a full-time to part-time position.
