Geelong players and coaching staff were left in shock on Friday after assistant coach Steven King was taken to hospital after collapsing at training on the eve of their preliminary final against the Brisbane Lions.

King suffered a medical episode and collapsed during the captain’s run and was taken by ambulance to Epworth hospital in Waurn Ponds.

He’s expected to be OK but players were taken into the rooms as King was attended to and coach Chris Scott said it would be “irresponsible” for him to take up his normal duties at the MCG on Saturday night.

King was at training having flown back from Perth where he was interviewed for the coaching job at the West Coast Eagles.

Without speculating on what was happening with his assistant coach, Scott said King’s health was the only priority for himself and the club.

“We’re just trying to stay calm and prioritise the right things which for us are to ensure we do everything we can to support Steven,“ Scott said at his weekly press conference.

“I don’t want to say too much that might not be accurate. I think it’s reasonable at the moment, even before we’ve had the chance to speak to Steven directly, for us to prioritise his health.

“It would be irresponsible for us to even consider him to be around over the next 24 hours or so.

“It is quite confronting. Our club, we’ve had similar sorts of episodes to this. Our experience is you’ve just got to deal with the situation as it presents.
