Falcons cheer squad behind Payneham Norwood Union's success in SA Amateur Football League

THEY are the boisterous team behind Payneham Norwood Union's premiership success this season.

The Falcons cheer squad formed before the club's SA Amateur Football League division three home game against Pembroke Old Scholars on August 3.

It originally boasted about 10 members - mostly club juniors - along with a handful of "Go Falcons" banners, black and white flags, and pompoms.

Within weeks more than 50 people were on board as PNU charged to a grand final win over Scotch OC.

Falcons cheer squad member and under-18 player Matt Di Virgilio, 17, says he was stunned by how much support the group was receiving.

"I'm in the Port Adelaide Magpies cheer squad and I just thought 'why not have a cheer squad for our SAAFL team'," he says.

"A few of us got together, got a few flags and took it from there.

"It's just kept growing every single game and has been incredible."

Falcons president Adrian Roberts says the cheer squad - the only one of its size in the amateur league - has been key to the club's premiership tilt.

"There's no doubt the crowd has something to do with it (the success) and they are right behind the team 100 per cent," Roberts says.

"It has grown into a monster."

Di Virgilio plans to attend all Falcons A-grade games next season if the Magpies become a Power reserves team.

And he hopes to be able to bring some Magpies-supporting mates with him.
