The Lowdown: Showdown 46 wrap

HE’S been nominated for the AFL’s mark of the week but Adelaide’s Hugh Greenwood has explained how it al went horribly wrong from there when he had the chance to seal victory in Showdown 46.

With the Power coming at them hard having just cut a 44-point deficit to 18 points with 10 minutes to play in the final quarter on Saturday night, Greenwood had the perfect sit on Willem Drew and took a hanger at the top of the square.

Brodie Smith’s kick inside 50m was perfectly weighted and Greenwood rose vertically to take a spectacular mark.

But as he went back to take his set shot from 15m out directly in front he didn’t realise how much time had gone by and admitted he hurried in to take the kick.

“I’ve been copping plenty for it, but it’s not a Showdown without a bit of drama,” Greenwood said on The Lowdown podcast on Monday.

“I don’t know what happened, everyone was like ‘take your time, take your time’ and I think I took a bit too much time.

“I waddled back soaking it all in and the umpire pretty much said hurry up off you go, and I turned around, did not look at the man on the mark I was just worried about kicking it (correctly).

“And I hit it flush and (Paddy) Ryder just timed it perfectly, he’s a left footer so he jumped up with his right hand and he didn’t just touch it — he smothered it, he batted it down.

“Then the footy god’s curse, they went straight up the other end and kicked a goal so it was perfectly scripted.

“I didn’t dwell on it too much, it was just one of those things and when they kicked a goal I was shaking my head and thinking ‘wow, I can’t believe that just happened’ but we were still up 30 so it wasn’t the end of the world.

“I feel like it happens to everyone at least once in their career, and if we had of lost I probably wouldn’t have shown my face today.”

Port Adelaide co-captain Tom Jonas, who also headlines The Lowdown, was watching it all unfold from the stands and said he sensed the moment was coming.

This week’s episode of The Lowdown was recorded at The Alma in Norwood after Jonas and Greenwood agreed to take the show on the road depending on which team won.

“You could see it (high mark) coming from a mile off, I was watching it was right in front of me, he had that four or five step run up and I was cursing,” Jonas said.

Greenwood said he was an aerial specialist on the basketball court but hadn’t been able to do that in football. But this season he’s taken three high marks in front of goal in four games.

“Basketball I used to play above the rim of course,” he joked.

“It’s taken a little while to transition to footy now.”
