Banana throwing woman a disgrace, but immediate condemnation a positive

THE only positive to come from a woman throwing a banana at Eddie Betts was the immediate condemnation on social media and from both Adelaide and Port Adelaide, writes Mark Robinson.

SHE’S probably so stupid she’s asking herself: What did I do wrong?

What a disgrace she is.

The only positive to come from this woman throwing a banana at Eddie Betts was the immediate condemnation on social media firstly and then from both the Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs and as the story took hold yesterday, from almost all of society.

We sometimes wonder if the larger community is moving as quickly and positively as we’d like in regards to this sort of behaviour, but the past 36 hours has shown the overwhelming view: The behaviour was abhorrent and completely unacceptable.

Really, a banana?

It’s wacky enough to think someone would actually throw something at an AFL player.

To be so outraged at Betts for kicking a blinding goal that you leave your standing area, hunt through your bag for a missile and then actually throw it ... it’s beyond imagination.

To be so ignorant and uneducated to think it’s OK to throw a banana at an indigenous player ... it’s beyond belief.

Betts is a treasure.

He brings so much joy to the game and to the supporters - and not only Adelaide supporters - he should be feted as the greatest small forward to have ever played the game.

Instead, on this night anyhow, he has a banana hurled at him by a Neanderthal Port supporter.

That smug, seemingly triumphant look on her face as she stands there, clearly proud of what she had just done, is both sickening and frightening.

She probably doesn’t even realise it is racism at its ugliest.

That’s the frightening aspect. That despite all the education and leanings, despite knowing what is right from wrong, she still did it.

The condemnation of this person is widespread, but there are still some people putting their hands up to defend her.

They might call it reverse bullying and blah, blah, blah.

But there’s no sympathy from this quarter _ if you want to be stupid, we’ll treat you as stupid.

The Showdown was a cracking game of football: Tight, fierce and a never-give-up attitude from both teams.

It will be now remembered as the night a member of the public shamed herself and embarrassed the sport.
