The 44-year-old was driving an excavator when it rolled and trapped him underneath it, leaving him with life-threatening chest injuries.

Emergency services had to use the “jaws of life” hydraulic tool to free him and rush him to Gold Coast University Hospital, where the married father of three was placed in an induced coma.

His family released an update on the former midfielder’s condition on Christmas Day, thanking everyone for their support during the horrendous ordeal.

The statement was released via the Labrador footy club on the Gold Coast, which Shattock represented as a captain, coach and life member following his AFL career.

“The Shattock family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support, love and kindness shown to Aaron during this incredibly challenging time,” the statement said.

“Your compassion has provided him — and our entire family — with the strength and hope to keep fighting.

“Aaron remains in a critical but stable condition and we are holding on to hope with each passing day.

“We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and express our sincerest appreciation for your continued care and support.”

The statement signed off “With love, the Shattock family”.

The devastating news so close to Christmas rocked the AFL community.

Shattock’s captain at the Lions, Michael Voss, stated he was a “a ripping good fella” and “an outstanding teammate” in a comment on the club’s website.

“I can’t believe it … it’s terrible at any time but just before Christmas is even worse,” he added.

“Our prayers are with him and his family.”

Shattock was selected with the 45th pick in the 1998 AFL Draft out of Woodville-West Torrens in South Australia, making his debut two years later.

A reserve in the Lions’ 2001 premiership team, he came off the bench the following year as Leigh Matthews’ side won the second of three straight flags.

Shattock played 17 matches in that 2002 campaign, including all three finals.

Following 57 games for the Queensland club from 2000-2004, he spent two further years with Port Adelaide, playing 11 games for the Power.

Retiring in 2006, he then linked up with Labrador, where he finished out his playing days before filling assistant coach, senior coach and committee member roles.

A statement on the Tigers’ Facebook page on Sunday said: “‘Shatts’ is dearly loved by his family, friends and the entire Labrador community.

“A true Labrador person and life member, Aaron has been a significant part of our club since 2007.

“His passion for our club is unmatched and his presence is deeply valued.”
