Brisbane Lions’ young gun Levi Ashcroft will wear his father’s number 10 jumper in his first season in the AFL next year.
The Lions have handed Ashcroft the number his dad, Marcus, wore for 14 of his 15 seasons in a special father-son tribute on Wednesday.
Levi, who was taken with pick five in last month’s draft, said it was an honour to wear the number 10 after his brother, Will, took the number eight two years ago.
And another father-son gem, Jaspa Fletcher, will take over Joe Daniher’s number three jumper following the spearhead’s shock retirement after the flag win.
Fletcher wore number 28 across his first two seasons but has switched as the Lions attempt to go back-to-back next season.
New full forward Sam Day, who was enlisted to help fill the Daniher void, will wear the number 14.
Levi Ashcroft, who was considered the best player in the draft pool, said he had always wanted to wear his father’s jumper.
“It’s very special for me and for Dad, who obviously did so much in his career and for the Lions with number 10 on his back,” Levi said.
“He played in three premierships and played 318 games, so a very long career in that number and hopefully I can do half as good as he did.
“I definitely always wanted to wear number 10 for a long time as I played a lot of my junior footy in number 10 off what dad did in that number.
“It’s going to be really amazing to be able to wear that number out on the Gabba and other grounds around Australia.”
Levi said it meant his locker would be next to champion midfielder Lachie Neale, who wears number nine.
His brother, Will, is one locker over in number eight.
Levi said his father’s jumper provided extra motivation, rather than adding pressure.
“It’s a driving factor for me when I see dad’s name on the locker,” Levi said.
“Every time I go to open it, I see what he achieved and all the things he did for this club.
“It’s pretty cool to be able to be near Will and experience my first moments in an AFL environment with him which is pretty special.
“Poor old Lachie is in a bit of an ‘Ashcroft sandwich’ at the moment.”
Marcus Ashcroft, a triple premiership player at Brisbane in 2001-03 said it was a joy to watch both of his sons play in the same team.
“We are really fortunate and lucky as parents to have both our boys at a great club with great role models which we are very grateful for,” Marcus Ashcroft said.
“Since Will stepped through the doors here at the Lions I was always conscious of being out of the way and wanting him to do his own and it is similar for Levi.
“He is a young man with aspirations that knows what he wants to do so we just get out of the way and let him do his thing.”
