Dylan Shiel deal in limbo as Essendon, GWS reach impasse in trade talks

A STAND-off between Essendon and Greater Western Sydney over a deal for Dylan Shiel is set to drag on until Wednesday night’s trade deadline with the two teams deadlocked over the midfield jet’s value.

A STAND-off between Essendon and Greater Western Sydney over a deal for midfield jet Dylan Shiel is set to drag on until Wednesday night’s trade deadline.

Talks between the Dons and Giants yesterday failed to break the impasse, with the expansion club adamant Shiel, 25, is worth two first-round picks.

Deals to send stars Dayne Beams, Jesse Hogan, Lachie Neale, Steven May and Chad Wingard to new clubs are also in limbo with just two days until the exchange frenzy wraps up at 8.30pm tomorrow at Marvel Stadium.

ROBBO: HOW HIRD HELPED WOO SHIEL

GWS has said it will hold Shiel to his contract next season unless the Bombers can satisfy its demands. Essendon’s best offer has been its first two selections in this year’s national draft — No.9 and 34.

Carlton, which narrowly lost the race as Shiel’s preferred destination last week, have stayed in contact with Giants officials and are monitoring the situation.

Despite facing a salary cap squeeze, GWS has declared it is willing to keep Shiel on its list if a resolution cannot be reached.

A compromise deal could see Essendon offer the Giants a combination of selections close to the value of a first-round pick and an early second-round pick.

GWS list boss Jason McCartney yesterday said Shiel’s move to Tullamarine was far from a formality.

“I found it fascinating waking up yesterday reading the Herald Sun and I just thought, ‘The trade period must have finished’. It’s just really interesting reading a double-page spread on a contracted player who has a year to run, and a deal hasn’t been done,” he said at an industry breakfast hosted by Shiel’s management company Connors Sports.

Tom Scully’s move from GWS to Hawthorn has also stalled.

Scully, who turns 28 next May, is recovering from a severe ankle injury suffered in Round 2 and is considered a remote chance to be fit for the start of next season.

The trade could involve the Hawk’s third-round pick 53 — a bargain-basement price that has bemused rival clubs.

GWS believe Collingwood’s willingness to offer two first-round picks for Adam Treloar in 2015 demonstrates its demands for Shiel are not too high.

Signalling their intention to play hardball in a statement released after Shiel nominated Essendon last Tuesday, a GWS spokesman said: “The Giants are prepared to discuss potential trade options with the Bombers that sees an appropriate return for the club.

“Dylan is contracted to the Giants for the 2019 season and he will remain a Giant should a suitable trade not be reached.”
