THEY’RE ready to fire ...
AFL Victoria has finalised the teams for the annual Young Guns match, to be played at North Port Oval on Sunday as a curtain-raiser to the VFL preliminary final between Williamstown and Essendon.
Players from the VFL, TAC Cup and suburban and country ranks figure in the teams, to be coached by George Morgan (Casey Scorpions) and Sean Kavanagh (Oakleigh Chargers).
They include Will Hayes, a midfielder from Footscray Bulldogs and the son of horse trainer David; Casey Scorpion Jordan Moncrieff, whose father, Michael, was a prominent goalkicker at Hawthorn; and Werribee midfielder Matt Hanson.
Highly rated Frankston Pines player Guy Hendry, a 196cm forward who booted 56 goals playing alongside ex-AFL man Aaron Edwards this year, was also included, at the request of former Frankston Dolphins assistant coach Pat Swayn.
AFL Victoria VFL Academy coach and mentor Darren Flanigan put the lists together after speaking to AFL clubs, VFL coaches and TAC Cup talent managers.
Flanigan said the Young Guns fixture had become a highlight of the Victorian football calendar and it was an was an important match for the players involved.
“History says that someone gets drafted out of this game every year,’’ he said.
“Last year it was Adam Saad from Coburg. If there was any doubt he could play AFL footy he threw it out the window. His game was outstanding, just with his kicking and his speed. He’s certainly franked his form by playing as many games as he has for Gold Coast.
“A similar sort of opportunity awaits the players we’ve picked for this year’s match. They’re all in the same spot, just outside or on the edge of contention of getting on an AFL list.’’
The match starts at 12.15pm.
