DARCY Moore looks certain to cost Collingwood its prized No.8 draft pick with Carlton and Western Bulldogs considering bidding their earlier selections in the hope they can steal the father-son star.

While the Blues could still favour retaining pick No.6 to keep their trade options open, it is believed that only a change of heart at a recruiting meeting on Monday morning will stop the Dogs pulling their trigger.

That would mean Moore heads to Whitten Oval or, as expected, the Magpies match the bid and secure the son of Brownlow medallist Peter with pick No.8.

The bidding meeting is at 10am on Monday at Etihad Stadium.

Moore is a 199cm swingman with enormous athleticism and remains a top-five talent for many recruiters.

Magpies chief recruiter Derek Hine has repeatedly stated the Pies would only use their first selection on Moore if they rated him at that pick or higher.

If not, Hine has said he would allow another club to swoop, although rivals believe that won’t happen.

“If you rank him against the big blokes, Paddy McCartin will go early but he’s right there with (Peter) Wright and (Sam) Durdin, and they could be gone before Collingwood’s pick,” one club’s national talent manager said.

“I don’t know what Dekka (Hine) is up to there. (Moore) is a super quick, intelligent kid who can play both ends.”

Moore booted two third-quarter goals to lead Oakleigh Chargers to the TAC Cup premiership last month, a week after dropping jaws with a spectacular mark.

Experts believe he will develop into a centre half-back at AFL level and continually praise his freakish athleticism for a tall.

Ironically, he would be a handy addition at both the Dogs and Blues.

Moore said this week that black and white “flows through my veins and goes through my head”.

“I was getting as excited as anyone else when they won that (2010) premiership,” he said.

AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan last week said it would be “more than a minor shock” if the Pies didn’t part with pick No.8 for Moore.

That pick could balloon to No.9 should Melbourne win pick No.3 as compensation for departing free agent James Frawley, although some clubs are sceptical that will happen.

The Dogs and Dees will secure key defender Zaine Cordy and 180cm midfielder Billy Stretch as father-sons respectively, most likely with third-round picks.

GWS academy player Jack Steele — a powerful midfielder from Canberra overlooked last year due to knee problems — is creating a late stir and could command a high selection.

Sydney will land top-three midfield talent Isaac Heeney at pick No.17 through its academy, while the Swans are also poised to draft Jack Hiscox and Abe Davis.

FATHER-SON BIDDING

IF a club with an earlier pick than Collingwood bids for Moore, the Magpies must use pick No.8 if they want to secure him. If no rival bid is forthcoming, the Pies will draft Moore with their second-round selection (No.29).
