Both Geelong Falcons sides advanced to Coates Talent League finals preliminary off the back of some impressive individual performances that strengthened their draft claims.

Ruckman Joe Pike, who was invited to test at October’s state draft combine invite, was the top-ranked player on the ground with 145 SuperCoach ranking points as his ruck craft and follow-up work at stoppages stood out in the Falcons boys’ 18-point win over GWV Rebels.

Pike dominated up against Rebels and Geelong Grammar ruck Flynn Penry, tallying 28 hit-outs, 11 of those to advantage, 14 disposals, 10 contested possessions and six clearances.

But AFLW draft prospect Chloe Adams topped the charts with a double ton, amassing 204 SuperCoach points, 24 disposals, 18 contested possessions, 11 tackles and eight clearances as the Falcons girls came back from a scoreless first term to win by 27 points against Tasmania Devils.

AFLW U18 All-Australian Sara Howley came close to Adams with 198 SuperCoach points, a game-high 28 disposals, 18 contested possessions and eight inside 50s.

The Newtown & Chillwell product continues to produce outstanding performances as a bottom-ager and she looms as a top pick in next year’s draft.

For the boys, Vic Country representative Tom Anastasopoulos, Will Mclachlan and Tom Burke all kicked three goals while Tobyn Murray continued his strong finish to the year with 20 disposals, 11 tackles and 131 points.

National combine invitee Angus Hastie kept in-form small forward Lachie Charleson quiet in an impressive lockdown role, restricting him to a goal and nine touches – no mean feat considering he had kicked 16.11 in his previous four matches.

Inside bull Pat Hughes put in another strong display in the midfield with 19 disposals, seven tackles, six clearances, a goal and 132 points, backing up his 12 clearances against Bendigo Pioneers last week.

Geelong Falcons talent manager Paul Corrigan said Hughes’ form can’t be ignored by recruiters, saying he has rolled his sleeves up and got to work after the disappointment of missing out on the Vic Country squad due to recruiters’ concerns.

“Hughes just continues to do what he does, he is super strong, he is a bull on the inside and he just keeps winning clearances for us. He just keeps putting up performances you can’t ignore,” Corrigan said.

“He was pretty disappointed that he missed out on Vic Country, the champs and we just sort of spoke and said the best thing you can do is let your footy do the talking.

“To his credit that’s what he’s been able to do and in the last couple of months he has put some strong, consistent performances together and showed why he is still a valuable player not only for us but in the competition.

“I thought Hastie down back again strengthened his case as far as the draft goes playing on (Charleson) and took him out of the game.”
