A Vic Metro prospect with Scott Pendlebury-like traits put his name up in lights with an immense performance against Western Australia at the under-16 national championships on the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

Oliver Greeves, a powerful and clean 190cm midfielder from Lysterfield, dominated with 27 disposals, nine clearances, 184 SuperCoach points and 3.2 as Metro defeated the Sandgropers by 41 points.

Greeves formed a formidable midfield trio with Metro captain Jack Dalton, who recorded a game-high 29 disposals, seven inside 50s, six clearances and 158 points and wingman Lachy Dovaston (26 disposals, one goal, 148 points).

Tyson Gresham – who Vic Metro coach Andrew Sturgess believes plays in a similar vein to his older brother, St Kilda star Jade – was also impressive with 22 disposals and two goals.

Sturgess likened Greeves awareness in traffic to Collingwood champion Scott Pendlebury.

“When he gets the ball in congestion he actually has a bit a look around his shoulder to see what is coming at him and I think that’s sort of some of the attributes that Scott Pendlebury has,” Sturgess said.

“You can picture Scott Pendlebury through traffic just shifting his head side to side and over his shoulder to see where the defence is coming from and I think for a kid at 16 to have that kind of awareness and understanding of what is happening around him is a pretty cool trait to have.”

“He is obviously within our top three players and hopefully he can continue on that trajectory.

“(Tyson and Jade) play fairly similar, Tyson is quite lively and evasive and really clean below his knees, clever with ball in hand and brings his other teammates into the game. Jade is much the same.”

In the later game Vic Country was thumped by 73 points against South Australia, with Geelong Falcons product Giuseppe Posterino kicking their only goal for the match.

South Australian talents Dyson Sharp (33 disposals, 19 contested possessions, 11 clearances, 168 SuperCoach points), Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier (24 disposals, 14 contested possessions, two goals and 123 points) and Aidan Schubert (18 disposals, 12 hit-outs, three goals and 130 points) shone brightly in wet conditions as rain bucketed down at Heritage Bank Arena.

Willem Drew, the younger brother of Port Adelaide wingman Xavier and 2023 draft prospect Zane, and sister of Power AFLW player Yasmin, was one of Vic Country’s best with 17 touches and 95 points, while Ben Rongdit toiled hard with 16 disposals, 12 tackles and 128 points in defence.
