AFL Draft 2023: All the late mail from every club ahead of the second round

Night one is over, but plenty of talents are left on the board. Who could your club take, and will West Coast trade the first pick of the night? See all the intel here.

AFL Draft 2023: All the late mail

There were shocks, live trades and plenty of wild celebrations on a marathon opening night of the AFL Draft.

But as the dust settles on the first round, clubs will turn their attention to the remainder of the national draft, with second round to commence from 7pm tonight.

Here’s all the late mail.

ADELAIDE

Draft haul: Daniel Curtin (pick 8), Charlie Edwards (21) Oscar Ryan (27)

Remaining picks: Nil

Tasmanian Arie Schoenmaker, who the Crows met ahead of the first round on Monday morning, is still on the board, but Adelaide won’t take part on Tuesday night after being a major player in the first-round. Recruiting boss Hamish Ogilvie and the Crows were “ecstatic” the bold play to secure Daniel Curtin, which only became a reality in the few days leading up to the draft, came off. Bolter Oscar Ryan might have got through to the second night but Ogilvie “didn’t want the guys to take a risk” on a player they rated highly.

BRISBANE LIONS

Draft haul: No picks taken

Remaining picks: 31, 43, 89

Brisbane didn’t take a player on the opening night but it did improve its draft hand, doing a deal with the Suns for pick 24, which eventually pushed out to 31 – the second pick of the second round. And the Lions would’ve been happy to see long-kicking Tasmanian defender Arie Schoenmaker and Gippsland tall Archer Reid – two they’ve been strongly linked to – go undrafted on Monday. Athletic West Australian Zane Zakotelsky is another prospect who had first-round interest that the Lions may consider at one of their early picks tonight.

CARLTON

Draft haul: Ashton Moir (pick 29)

Current picks: 34, 60

Carlton look to have its sights set on injecting more outside run after taking Ollie Hollands and Lachie Cowan last year. They have shown interest in Sandringham Dragon Archie Roberts as well as Dandenong Stingrays speedster Billy Wilson, who both played as defenders this year but could be used up the ground.The Blues have also been linked to Sandringham Dragons defender Matt Carroll, who rivals believe they could pounce on. WA prospect Mitch Edwards is another who could appeal as a developing ruck option, but they do have Hudson O’Keeffe already on their rookie list. Geelong Falcons 192cm forward Michael Rudd, crafty Stingray Kade De La Rue, athletic forward Oskar Smartt and WA utility Reece Torrent are others they have shown interest in and could be rookie options.

COLLINGWOOD

Current draft haul: Harry DeMattia (pick 25)

Current picks: 37, 65, 76, 80

The Pies are fans of Tasmanian superboot Arie Schoenmaker on the first night, but he might be taken by the time they are on the clock. Logan Morris and Archie Reid were both linked to their first choice but, again, are likely to be in demand early in the second round. After bidding on contested ball-winner Caiden Cleary, could they take tall WA midfielder Clay Hall? Collingwood will likely take one or two more selections in the national draft, and they have also shown an interest in Stingrays forward Kade De La Rue and Sandringham Dragons defender Matt Carroll throughout the year. Meanwhile, athletic Tasmanian Geordie Payne, who blitzed the state combine earlier in the year, is also in the mix late or as a rookie pick.

ESSENDON

Current draft haul: Nate Caddy (pick 10)

Remaining picks: 39, 86

Archie Roberts was link to the Bombers ahead of the draft and the creative defender is still on the board heading into night two. But there’s plenty of interest before Essendon’s pick 39. Tough midfielder George Stevens has fans early in the second-round, too, including the Bombers – but some clubs still aren’t convinced about the GWV Rebels onballer at the next level. Stevens’ Coates League teammate Luamon Lual and mid-sized Geelong Falcons forward Michael Rudd are two others linked to Essendon’s second pick in the draft, while they are also among the clubs to show interest in Werribee mature-ager Shaun Mannagh. WA tall Odin Jones remains a rookie chance.

FREMANTLE

Current draft haul: No picks taken

Remaining picks: 38, 41, 67, 85

Fremantle has put late work into Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Cooper Simpson, who shapes as possible target at 38 or 41. The Dockers also like dashing Geelong Falcons defender Angus Hastie and are right in the mix for exciting local prospect Aiden O’Driscoll, the younger brother of wingman Nathan. While he may not have him covered for height, O’Driscoll has his older sibling covered for speed, clocking the fastest 20-metre sprint time at the national combine. Given the departure of Lachie Schultz, forward Koen Sanchez, another WA product, would also have to be considered at the club’s first pick if still on the board. There’s also now some hope – certainly more than there was halfway through the year – NGA ruckman Mitch Edwards might get to pick 40, where the Dockers will be able to match a bid. Or will they trade up to make sure of it? Werribee’s mature-age star Shaun Mannagh has strong interest from the club and they loom as the frontrunner to snap him up. Speedy Sturt small Loch Rawlinson, who blitzed the field with a 2.894 second 20m sprint at the SA state combine, is one to look out for late, given the obvious void, while the Dockers are one of the clubs linked to a live trade with Gold Coast. Homegrown key forward Odin Jones might appeal as a rookie.

GEELONG

Current draft haul: Connor O’Sullivan (pick 11)

Remaining picks: 32, 36, 63, 68, 75, 77, 81

Geelong managed to acquire another second-round pick in its live trade with Essendon on night one wile shifting back just one spot, meaning the club hold two of the first seven selections on night two.The Cats have been linked to defenders Archie Roberts, Angus Hastie and Luamon Lual, who all bring something different. Hastie is a local talent, and his range is likely to begin at Geelong’s second-round pick. They have also shown an interest in 200cm key defender Ollie Murphy, GWV Rebels wingman Joel Freijah They did already took a key defender with their first choice, which could have a say on whether they take Murphy. Geelong has shown late interest in Werribee VFL defender Sam Clohesy, the Fothergill-Round-Mitchell medallist, which could see him join his brother, midfielder Ted, at the Cattery. It isn’t the only Werribee VFL talent they’ve been linked to, with the Cats among several clubs in the mix to take dynamic 26-year-old Shaun Mannagh. Ball-magnet George Stevens, could come into the frame with their back-end picks after impressing for Geelong’s VFL side this year. The Cats could take as many as five picks in the national draft and a number of Geelong Falcons are in contention late or as rookie picks, including hard-working forward Michael Rudd, small forward Tom Anastasopoulos and Morrish medallist Pat Hughes. Athletic ruckman Joe Pike could come into their thinking as a rookie, with the Cats the only club to interview him. But the most intriguing Geelong product is Barwon Heads smokey Oliver Wiltshire. The Cats have been spotted at Barwon Heads games watching the 21-year-old in action and have inquired about the rangy midfielder-forward. Will he be another Stephen Wells special? Tasmanian small forward Jack Callinan is also a chance to be taken with one of their later picks or as a rookie.

GOLD COAST

Current draft haul: Jed Walter (pick 3), Ethan Read (pick 9), Jake Rogers (14), Will Graham (26)

Remaining picks: 51, 54, 56, 61

After a big first night saw Gold Coast secure four Academy prospects in the first 26 picks, the Suns might not make a splash on Tuesday. But the club might be an active player in Wednesday’s rookie draft with three available rookie spots.

GWS

Current draft haul: Phoenix Gothard (pick 12), James Leake (pick 17)

Remaining picks: 44, 50, 64

GWS’ likely night two will entail matching a bid on academy prospect Harvey Thomas, with Fremantle looming as a possible bid threat. But the Giants have put a mountain of work into club tied defenders Luamon Lual and Tew Jiath, who remain on the board. Could they pull another surprise, like they did on night one in selecting bolter Phoenix Gothard? They have also shown interest in WA rebounder Joe Fonti, and they have the list flexibility to take another pick along with Thomas if it comes to that. The Giants also have access to rangy key forward Charlie McCormack, who they could add as a Category B rookie on Wednesday if he doesn’t receive a bid.

HAWTHORN

Current draft haul: Nick Watson (pick 5), Will McCabe (pick 19)

Remaining picks: 46, 52, 53

The hard work is done for the Hawks, taking dazzling forward Nick Watson and matching a bid on Will McCabe, which didn’t come too early. Despite having a few picks left, they appear set take just the one selection in father-son Calsher Dear, the son of the late Paul. They will take the athletic key forward with their final selection of the national draft if he doesn’t receive an earlier bid from a rival club.

MELBOURNE

Current draft haul: Caleb Windsor (pick 7), Koltyn Tholstrup (pick 13)

Remaining picks: 74, 88

After landing Caleb Windsor and Koltyn Tholstrup on the opening night, Melbourne might just about be done in the national draft. But the Demons have access to father-son midfielder Kynan Brown, who will automatically join the club’s list if he gets through on Tuesday night. But Brown, the son of 146-game former Demon Nathan, might attract a late rival bid.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Current draft haul: Colby McKercher (pick 2), Zane Duursma (pick 4), Taylor Goad (20), Wil Dawson (pick 22), Riley Hardeman (pick 23)

Remaining picks: Nil

Another club who played a big part on the opening night – drafting five first-round talents – North Melbourne is unlikely to play a part in the remainder of the draft on Tuesday.

PORT ADELAIDE

Current draft haul: No picks taken

Remaining picks: 62, 79, 83

Port Adelaide will enter the draft at 62 on Tuesday night, but just who might still be available remains unclear. The Power has shown interest in GWV Rebels small Lachie Charleson, who booted 17 goals in the final Coates League matches, throughout the year, while Sturt’s Loch Rawlinson is believed to be in their sights, with the Power looking bolster their small-forward stocks. Port has also tracked Vic Metro defender Matt Carrol, but the Sandringham Dragons teenager has fans earlier. And it’s unlikely the club will use any of its 2024 selections to move up, given father-son prospect Rome Burgoyne is part of next year’s crop. Jack Callinan, the son of former Adelaide player Ian, and Tom Anastasopoulos from the Geelong Falcons might be a chance as rookies.

RICHMOND

Current draft haul: No picks taken

Remaining picks: 35, 43, 55, 57

Richmond enters the draft for the first time tonight and a number of players are in contention. They have put work into Western Bulldogs academy defender Luamon Lual, and they can only nab him inside the first 40 selections. It’s a similar story for Hawks-tied talent Tew Jiath, who could also come into the frame. Richmond has shown strong interest in Logan Morris, a 192cm marking forward, and they are also in the hunt for 2023cm key forward Archer Reid if Brisbane don’t pounce first on night two. Wingman Joel Freijah is another prospect on Richmond’s radar, given Richmond will eventually need to replace wingman Kamdyn McIntosh. So are dashing Geelong Falcons defender Angus Hastie, and South Australian midfielder Kane McAuliffe. Henry Maerschel, a tall, athletic defender, looms as a potential rookie selection if he get through.

ST KILDA

Current draft haul: Darcy Wilson (pick 18), Lance Collard (pick 28)

Remaining picks: 33, 72, 78, 82

St Kilda has shown strong interest in Arie Schoemaker and is right in the mix to take him with the fourth pick on Tuesday night, after the Tasmanian went undrafted on Monday. Dashing Geelong Falcon Angus Hastie, WA ruckman Mitch Edwards and GWV Rebels onballer George Stevens are also likely to be in the mix. The big-body of Stevens, who averaged 16 contested possessions in the Coates League this year, would fit well alongside the speed and run of pick 18 Darcy Wilson. Powerful, long-kicking North Adelaide midfielder Kane McAuliffe has also been linked to the club on the second night.

SYDNEY

Current draft haul: Will Green (pick 15), Caiden Cleary (pick 24)

Remaining picks: 59, 70, 71

The Swans got a taste of their own medicine after placing more first round bids, with the club matching academy midfielder Caiden Cleary’s bid from Collingwood. But the Swans planned to use just two picks in the national draft so it won’t matter. They will be watching to see if Indhi Kirk, the son of champion Swan Brett, makes it to the rookie draft where they can automatically list him as a Category B. It appears unlikely that a rival club would swoop in. Caleb May is their other academy graduate, but the pick-up of Green likely eliminates their need for another developing ruckman.

WEST COAST

Draft haul: Harley Reid (pick 1)

Remaining picks: 30, 40, 49, 66

The Eagles hold the very popular first pick of the second night and rivals believe they are open to moving back in the order if the right offer presents, but others think they are set to hold the pick. If they do hold, WA ruckman Mitch Edwards is still on the board and the Dockers are unable to match a bid until after pick 40. Neat-kicking Sandringham playmaker Archie Roberts, Tasmanian Arie Schoenmaker and local talent Aiden O’Driscoll have all been linked to the Eagles who pick three times in the next 19 selections, as it stands. While the Eagles are fans themselves, Roberts and Schoenmaker, in particular, have plenty of interest early in the second round and clubs could come calling. West Coast’s own NGA prospect, forward-ruck Coen Livingstone, appears set to be taken as a Category B rookie in the likely event he isn’t taken in the national draft, ahead of fellow Eagles academy product Oscar Hine-Baston.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Current draft haul: Ryley Sanders (pick 6), Jordan Croft (pick 15)

Remaining picks: 45, 47, 58

The Western Bulldogs are expected to take another two picks, and they will be crossing their fingers and toes that one of those is NGA academy prospectsLuamon Lual slips past the pick 40 threshold. But Geelong (two picks), Richmond, Essendon and Fremantle, who have all shown interest in the defender, hold selections from picks 30-40. They are among the clubs in the mix for tall wingman Joel Freijah, and the Bulldogs are considered the sleeper for Norm Goss medallist Shaun Mannagh, who they had interest in ahead of the mid-season draft. Could he be the latest mature-age recruit for the Dogs? Geelong Falcons medium forward Michael Rudd, Dandenong Stingrays defender Kobe Shipp and Eagles NGA product Oscar Hine-Baston are all later chances.
