Contract status deep dive: Updates on every player drafted, signed in the last AFL off-season

Most clubs move quickly to lock away top draft picks on long-term deals, but several early selections remain unsigned beyond their initial contract. See where your club stands.

KFC SuperCoach AFL: Hot & Cold Round 21

The first name called out in last year’s draft is one of several bright talents still waiting in a show of faith contract extension with their new club.

Of the top five picks from November’s draft, only the No.1, Giant Aaron Cadman, and untried No.5 pick Elijah Tsatas remain without a new contract.

While new deals for draftees aren’t vital, given standard contracts run for two seasons, it is commonplace for top-end talents to be signed up once a club has got a look at what it likes.

North Melbourne wasted no time, eagerly inking new deals with prized picks Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw almost as soon as possible.

Carlton acted quickly to sign up its four draftees – Ollie Hollands, Lachie Cowan, Jaxon Binns and Harry Lemmey.

Of last year’s top 10, Cadman, Tsatas, injured Cat Jhye Clark, Eagle Reuben Ginbey and exciting St Kilda forward Mattaes Philippou are sitting without extensions.

Hawthorn’s Josh Weddle is another draftee to shine in his opening year, but extension talks are yet to kick off for the young Hawk.

Here is a run-down on every draftee and every summer signing, their progress this year and where their contract sits.

ADELAIDE

Max Michalanney

Draft pick: 17 (father-son), 2023 AFL games: 19, contract status: end of 2026

A home-run father-son pick for Adelaide, Michalanney has slotted in perfectly into defence for the Crows and looks like a 200-gamer. Appropriately, the Crows extended him long-term in June.

Billy Dowling

Draft pick: 43, yet to debut, contract status: end of 2026

A foot injury curtailed Dowling’s pre-season and he hasn’t featured yet at AFL level. Recently inked a two-year extension with the Crows.

Hugh Bond

Draft pick: 50, yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

No debut yet for the Victorian, who has struggled to put up numbers in the SANFL.

Tyler Brown

Summer supplemental signing, games: 1, contract status: out-of-contract

The first ex-Collingwood player signed by Adelaide over summer, Brown has played one game for the Crows, subbed on in round 1. The former father-son Magpie played 27 games with his first club but faces doubt about his future.

Mark Keane

Summer supplemental signing, games: 2, contract status: end of 2025

The Irishman is right in the frame to be part of Adelaide’s late-season surge towards the top-eight, with Tom Doedee, Jordon Butts and Nick Murray all injured. His last-minute recruitment seems a masterstroke all of a sudden.

BRISBANE

Will Ashcroft

Draft pick: 2 (father-son), games: 18, contract status: end of 2026

The gun midfielder was signed up for four years before he was even officially drafted. An ACL injury was a cruel blow for the youngster, who will now miss a large chunk of 2024 but he did everything he could to impress in his first 18 games.

Jaspa Fletcher

Draft pick: 12 (academy, father-son), games: 8, contract status: end of 2026

Given his poise and smarts, Fletcher would almost certainly have played earlier this year had it not been for a back stress problem. Inked an extension recently until the end of 2026 and he has been a superb fit in the half-back line for the Lions.

Shadeau Brian

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A Category B rookie, Brian bagged four goals in a VFL game against Sydney but the forward has otherwise put up only modest numbers in his first year on the list.

Darragh Joyce

Summer supplemental signing, games: 5, contract status: out-of-contract

Snapped up by the Lions as potential cover for Marcus Adams, Joyce played in five of the first six games of the year but hasn’t featured at AFL level since. The former Saint has seen Jack Payne take the reins alongside Harris Andrews and at 26, Joyce would only be kept on the list next year as a back up.

Conor McKenna

Summer supplemental signing, games: 20, contract status: out-of-contract

Brisbane beat out a few clubs including St Kilda and Geelong for the dashing ex-Essendon defender’s AFL return and his signing has been a masterstroke. McKenna has played in all 20 games for the Lions and looks to be a lock for the finals series. Expect a pay rise from his rookie list deal in a multi-year extension.

Darryl McDowell-White

Father-son signing, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The son of a Lions great, McDowell-White has been working on his game as a pressure forward in the VFL this year.

CARLTON

Oliver Hollands

Draft pick: 11, games: 14, contract status: end of 2026

A collarbone cost Hollands eight weeks during the middle of the year but the Blues love the endless run he provides on the wing and signed him up to an extension before round 1. Landed a rising star nomination this week.

Lachlan Cowan

Draft pick: 30, games: 7, contract status: end of 2026

Just like Hollands, Cowan was extended before his debut in round 1. He has found the ball of late in the VFL, averaging 23 touches in his past five games.

Jaxon Binns

Draft pick: 32, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2026

The Blues locked the ball-magnet Binns in to an extension in mid-July, after he has averaged a tick over 29 disposals a game in the VFL to put himself on the fringe of a debut.

Harry Lemmey

Draft pick: 47, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2025

Lemmey was the fourth of the Carlton slate to be extended when he signed up in July. He is clearly stuck behind some forward-line guns at Carlton but the Blues like him as a forward-ruck.

Alex Cincotta

Summer supplemental signing, games: 13, contract status: end of 2024

An excellent signing to cover for the missing Zac Williams, the former VFL Blue has been more than useful running off half-back and signed a one-year extension earlier this year. A great story after working his way up from local footy.

Hudson O’Keefe

Summer supplemental signing, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A beanpole ruck, O’Keefe was inked for an extra year in July, with the Blues thrilled at his progress when playing as a solo ruck in the VFL. He got his hand on 33 hitouts and five clearances against Collingwood in his most recent game.

COLLINGWOOD

Ed Allan

Draft pick: 19, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2026

The Magpies love the tall midfielder and extended his contract back in February. He has gone through some ups and downs but gathered over 23 disposals four times in the VFL so far this year.

Jakob Ryan

Draft pick: 28, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2026

Much like Allan, the Magpies love the look of Ryan as a defender and signed him up until the end of 2026 recently. He knows how the find the footy and has kicked it superbly in the VFL this year, going at an efficiency of 81.2 per cent.

Joe Richards

Draft pick: 48, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The feel-good story schoolteacher plucked from the bush, Richards has been toiling away in the VFL this year, averaging 12.5 disposals a game. He lost eight weeks to a hamstring injury in the first half of the season.

Dasher Oleg Markov has been handy for the Pies. Picture: Michael Klein.

Oleg Markov

Summer supplemental signing, games: 17, contract status: out-of-contract

Markov was training at Carlton when Collingwood swooped and his signing has been a wild success. The speedster has played 17 games off half-back for the Magpies and is sure to be in the squad come finals time. No doubt he is deserving of a new contract and a pay rise.

Oscar Steene

Summer supplemental signing, games: yet to debut, contract status: out-of-contract

Steene was actually signed up by the Pies before Markov but the young ruck hasn’t been called upon at the top level. He has averaged a tick under 15 hitouts a game in the VFL.

ESSENDON

Elijah Tsatas

Draft pick: 5, games: 1, contract status: end of 2024

One of the few top draftees to yet be extended beyond the initial two-year deal, Tsatas finally busted down the door for an AFL debut last week. He hoovered up 35 disposals against Gold Coast and 31 against Geelong in back-to-back games to put himself firmly in the selection frame.

Lewis Hayes

Draft pick: 25, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A key defender by trade, Hayes has been left to develop in his first on the list and has hardly figured in selection for the AFL side. Took 10 marks in a game on three separate occasions.

Alwyn Davey Jr

Draft pick: 45 (father-son), games: 10, contract status: end of 2025

Played AFL early in the year but was been sent back to the VFL in the second half of 2023. The Dons inked Davey Jr up to a one-year extension in April.

Jayden Davey

Draft pick: 54 (father-son), games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

No footy at any level for Davey this year after he copped a knee injury in summer.

Rhett Montgomerie

Rookie pick: 4, games: yet to debut, contract status: out-of-contract

The mature rookie has had some good days in the VFL as a running defender but hasn’t been called upon by Brad Scott to step into the seniors. Borderline whether he is brought back next year.

Jaiden Hunter

Mid-season draft pick: 9, games: yet to debut, contract status: out-of-contract

Hunter put himself up for a six-month contract when plucked by the Bombers mid-season and then a back injury sidelined him after just two VFL games. He will hope his promise was enough to get a second year on the list.

FREMANTLE

Hugh Davies

Draft pick: 33, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

This was always going to be a learning year for the tall Docker, who has shown good signs in the WAFL, including in round 14 where he took four intercept marks and had seven intercept possessions.

Tom Emmett

Draft pick: 41, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Solid but not spectacular returns for Emmett in the WAFL this year with 13 goals from 12 games.

Max Knobel

Draft pick: 42, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Concussion and leg injuries have sidelined Knobel at times this year and he has played predominantly in the WAFL reserves. Should be a slow burn for the giant ruck prospect.

Corey Wagner

Draft pick: 57, games: 6, contract status: end of 2024

The former Roo and Dee has played four times for the Dockers this year, with a 20-disposal outing in round 19 against Sydney his best effort. Appears to be playing for his career – again – in 2024.

Josh Draper

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2025

No AFL debut yet for the developing defender but the Dockers signed Draper up until the end of 2025, where he will stay as a Category B rookie.

Conrad Williams

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: out-of-contract

Of Williams’ 14 WAFL games, 11 have come in the reserves where he averaged 12.7 disposals a game. A long way to go to the top level.

Ethan Stanley

Mid-season draft pick: 8, games: 2, contract status: out-of-contract

Used as the sub on debut in round 19 and may see more gametime as the season winds down given Fremantle is now out of the finals running.

GEELONG

Jhye Clark

Draft pick: 8, games: 1, contract status: end of 2024

Looked like a ready-made midfielder when he was subbed on for Geelong in the final quarter back in round 9 against Richmond. But then Clark was struck down by a foot injury and he hasn’t played since. One of the rare top draftees not handed a contract extension yet but Clark and the Cats will talk and sort something out once he is back playing.

Phoenix Foster

Draft pick: 52, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Had to work through a sore knee over summer and has shown some glimpses playing across the field in 11 VFL games so far this year.

Oscar Murdoch

Rookie pick: 18, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

A local with a strong left boot, Murdoch is likely to get another year as a developing half-back.

Jhye Clark was stuck in a moon boot. Picture: Brad Fleet

Osca Riccardi

Rookie pick: 32, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

Expect Riccardi to stick around at the Cats. Geelong was understanding the hard-running son of Peter would take some time to build an AFL body and he has shown some progress in the seconds.

Ted Clohesy

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

Geelong was delighted with the early-season form of Clohesy, who slotted in as a hard tackling midfielder-forward in the VFL and he will stick around next year and beyond.

Mitch Hardie

Mid-season draft pick: 7, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

While Hardie only has a deal until the end of this year, he and the Cats both spoke about him being a prospect for the future when he was drafted mid-season. Expect him to be around in 2024.

GOLD COAST

Bailey Humphrey

Draft pick: 6, games: 17, contract status: end of 2028

The Suns went big in June, signing Humphrey to the longest extension of any player selected in the national draft last year by locking the classy midfielder-forward in until 2028. Humphrey shows matchwinning traits and just looks like a star.

Connor Blakely

Rookie pick: 7, games: 0, contract status: end of 2023

A calf injury hit Blakely’s early season but since he has regularly racked up numbers in the VFL without playing a game at AFL level. Hard to see the 27-year-old playing on.

Jake Stein

Rookie pick: 23, games: 0, contract status: end of 2023

The former Giant and Commonwealth Games athlete has been clearly stuck behind Sam Collins and Charlie Ballard in defence at the Suns this year. At 29, he is likely to be moved on.

Lloyd Johnston

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Inked as a Category B rookie before this season, Johnston has shown good signs as a running defender and has consistently found the ball in recent weeks, having averaged 15.8 disposals in his last five VFL games.

Jed Anderson

Summer supplemental signing, games: 0, contract status: end of 2023

The hard-nosed midfielder took indefinite leave in June and is unlikely to return to football, ending his career on 99 AFL games.

Brodie McLaughlin

Summer supplemental signing, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

McLaughlin will draw some interest across the league after booking 41 goals in 16 VFL games, second only in the VFL to teammate Chris Burgess. McLaughlin booted bags of six against Geelong and five against Box Hill. The goalsneak knows his way around the big sticks.

GWS GIANTS

Aaron Cadman

Draft pick: 1, games: 12, contract status: end of 2024

The No.1 pick is still yet to sign an extension, a rarity in the recent years of drafting. Cadman has battled to get his hands on the ball in his 11 games so far and will potentially fall out of the side as the Giants make a surprise finals run.

Harry Rowston

Draft pick: 16 (academy), games: 7, contract status: end of 2026

Rowston played six games in a row in the early half of the season but has largely been plying his trade in the twos since. The Giants like the academy kid, having handed him a contract extension in April.

Darcy Jones

Draft pick: 21, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2026

The speedy forward blew out his knee in March but showed enough over summer to be signed up by the Giants with a two-year extension. Jones did the injury in his one game of the season and has been on ice since.

Max Gruzewski

Draft pick: 22, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2026

Capable of playing at both ends, Gruzewski has kicked at least three goals on four separate occasions in the VFL and knows how to kick a goal.

Toby McMullin

Draft pick: 34, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Like Cadman, McMullin is yet to extend his initial deal as he plies his trade on a half-forward flank in the VFL. He has managed to find the ball and the goals regularly throughout the year so far.

Jason Gillbee

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Most famous as the ‘Milkman’ because of his outrageous claim he replaced his water intake with milk, the rangy midfielder has averaged 17 disposals a game playing mostly on the outside in the VFL this year.

Nick Madden

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The giant ruck has spent the season working under retired big man Shane Mumford and GWS rated him highly enough to consider him one of the best ruck prospects in the nation before signing him from their academy.

HAWTHORN

Cam Mackenzie

Draft pick: 7, games: 14, contract status: end of 2026

The classy midfielder has averaged 25.2 disposals a game in the VFL and generally uses the ball well. Expect him to be locked into Sam Mitchell’s midfield next year after playing 14 AFL games in his debut year. The Hawks liked him enough to extend him in May.

Josh Weddle

Draft pick: 18, games: 14, contract status: end of 2024

Hawthorn fans love the dash and commitment of Weddle off half-back and he appears a good match for James Sicily. No talks have started on a contract extension yet, which is unusual for draftees who have played more than 10 games this year.

Henry Hustwaite

Draft pick: 37, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A strong ball winner, Hustwaite has found form in the back half of the VFL season and put up strong numbers at Box Hill, averaging 22.7 disposals a game. No debut yet but he is in the frame.

Jack O’Sullivan

Draft pick: 46, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Sidelined with a groin injury, O’Sullivan has run through the midfield and forward line for Box Hill this VFL season with a 27 disposal, one goal game against Coburg his best this year.

Bailey Macdonald

Draft pick: 51, games: 1, contract status: end of 2024

Made his debut in round 12 and collected 10 disposals against Port Adelaide but hasn’t been seen at AFL level since. Well rated by the Hawks for his defensive rebound.

Joshua Bennetts

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The speedy forward has kicked 13 goals in 16 VFL games this year as he adapts to a half-forward role.

Clay Tucker

Mid-season draft pick: 3, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The ruck was drafted after training with Hawthorn during the year and came with an 18-month contract, so he will be sticking around in 2024. Tucker has averaged 12.8 hitouts a game in six VFL games with Box Hill.

Brandon Ryan

Mid-season draft pick: 12, games: 2, contract status: end of 2023

The gangly forward has booted 26 goals in 12 VFL games this year, including bags of five (against Sydney) and four (against the Giants). Sam Mitchell labelled Ryan a future “crowd favourite” before his debut and he booted three goals in an upset win over Collingwood. Seems a real prospect.

MELBOURNE

Matthew Jefferson

Draft pick: 15, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2026

The Demons extended Jefferson recently having been impressed with his competitiveness. Can the 195cm forward be next year’s Jacob van Rooyen?

Jed Adams

Draft pick: 38, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The tall defender has averaged a respectable 1.5 intercept marks a year in the VFL this season as he settles in at full-back. He will be spending plenty of time learning off Steven May and Jake Lever.

Will Verrall

Rookie pick: 14, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A pelvis injury meant Verrall didn’t play until June but the Demons were happy enough with the ruck’s progress to hand him a one-year extension. He will remain on the rookie list.

Matthew Jefferson has been plugging away in the VFL. Picture: Dylan Burns/AFL Photos
Matthew Jefferson has been plugging away in the VFL. Picture: Dylan Burns/AFL Photos

Oliver Sestan

Rookie pick: 28, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The long-haired forward joined Verrall in extending his contract in May. In 16 VFL matches he had averaged just a tick under a goal a game.

Kye Turner

Summer supplemental signing, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

The defender was plucked from VAFA’s Premier B league over summer but he is currently out with a groin injury. The Dees liked his ability to play on multiple types in defence.

Kyah Farris-White

International signing, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A Category B rookie, Farris-White played college basketball before the Dees signed him up late last year. The ruck has played five VFL games and 11 in the Coates League with Dandenong Stingrays as he settles into footy.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Harry Sheezel

Draft pick: 3, games: 20, contract status: end of 2026

The Roos quickly extended Sheezel earlier this year with the smooth mover on the way to the Rising Star podium. After round 21, the teen has had 86 more disposals than any other Kangaroo this year.

George Wardlaw

Draft pick: 4, games: 7, contract status: end of 2026

Like Sheezel, the Roos extended Wardlaw in May. He has been excellent as a centre bounce midfielder in seven games this year, and his sparking talent was highlighted by Alastair Clarkson as one reason he became so keen to get back into coaching.

Brayden George

Draft pick: 26, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

No gametime for George at any level this season due to a knee injury but Roos stand-in coach Brett Ratten said he could be the pick of the draft class – even ahead of Wardlaw and Sheezel.

Cooper Harvey

Draft pick: 56 (father-son), games: 3, contract status: end of 2024

Harvey has shown good signs in his first few games for the Roos and he certainly knows his way around the goals, having booted two bags of five and one of four in the VFL this season.

Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw are stars of the future. Picture: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images
Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw are stars of the future. Picture: Daniel Pockett/Getty Images

Blake Drury

Rookie pick: 1, games: 3, contract status: end of 2023

The Roos love Drury as a tough half-back flanker who can use the ball well. Should land a new deal at the end of the season.

Hamish Free

Rookie pick: 19, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

The 25-year-old copped shoulder surgery that ruined his season after just nine VFL games. The mature pick didn’t get a look in at AFL level before that so could be in trouble.

Daniel Howe

Rookie pick: 33, games: 9, contract status: end of 2023

Snagged by former coach Alastair Clarkson to fill a gap, Howe has only had more than 20 disposals twice in his nine games this year. Hard to see him going around again.

Liam Shiels

Summer supplemental signing, games: 16, contract status: end of 2023

An indictment of the rest of the North Melbourne list as much as it is a positive for Shiels, only five Roos have had more disposals than Shiels this year. He has been a solid contributor but it seems unlikely he will go around again.

Robert Hansen Jr

Mid-season draft pick: 2, games: 2, contract status: end of 2024

The classy forward came to North Melbourne through the mid-season draft with an 18-month contract so he will get a chance to impress again next year. Quiet in his two AFL games, gathering four disposals on each occasion.

PORT ADELAIDE

Tom McCallum

Draft pick: 34, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The tall defender hasn’t been required at AFL level and has worked on his craft in the SANFL all year. McCallum had his appendix removed in July, ruling him out for a month.

Thomas Scully

Draft pick: 53, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

No debut of extension for Scully, who has kicked 17 goals in 15 games in the reserves this year playing deep forward.

Quinton Narkle joined the Power mid-season. Picture: Mark Stewart
Quinton Narkle joined the Power mid-season. Picture: Mark Stewart

Kyle Marshall

Draft pick: 59, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A two-metre tall defender, Marshall has joined the other Power draftees in working through the SANFL this season. Marshall has played almost entirely as a lockdown defender, averaging 7.8 disposals a game.

Nathan Barkla

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

A decision will likely be made at the end of the year on the teen midfielder, who has averaged just 7.5 disposals a game in the SANFL.

Quinton Narkle

Mid-season draft pick: 11, games: 3, contract status: end of 2023

On the edge of Port Adelaide’s best team as the Power surge into finals, Narkle has done just about everything right to get a new deal at his second AFL club.

RICHMOND

Kaleb Smith

Draft pick: 49, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Smith was put onto Richmond’s inactive list in May and hasn’t played a match in 2023 as he works through a foot stress injury.

Steely Green

Draft pick: 55, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Green has averaged just 10.3 disposals a game in the VFL and his efficiency numbers are low in his first year with Richmond.

Seth Campbell

Rookie pick: 12, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

An adductor injury kept Campbell out of much of 2023 and he has played just three VFL games this year.

Tylar Young has become a mainstay in the Richmond backline. Picture: Michael Klein.
Tylar Young has become a mainstay in the Richmond backline. Picture: Michael Klein.

Tylar Young

Rookie pick: 26, games: 16, contract status: end of 2025

Richmond has high hopes for the mature defender, who has proven nearly impossible to beat in one-on-one contests so far this year. A brilliant pick up off the rookie list and appears bedded into the Tigers’ defence.

Kaelan Bradtke

Summer supplemental signing, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

Signed over Quinton Narkle in summer, Bradtke broke his hand in the first half of the season and missed a chunk of time. The athletic forward has kicked a goal in every VFL game he hasn’t been injured, including a haul of five in round 1.

Matthew Coulthard

Mid-season draft pick: 4, games: 3, contract status: end of 2023

The speedy forward made an impact on debut in round 19, helping Richmond claw back for a win over Hawthorn. He looked like he had plenty of talent in that debut and a heap of speed.

James Trezise

Mid-season draft pick: 13, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

Trezise has stayed in the Richmond VFL side since he was picked up in the mid-season draft and had more than 20 disposals in four games running recently across half-back.

ST KILDA

Mattaes Phillipou

Draft pick: 10, games: 20, contract status: end of 2024

Phillipou has been locked in by Ross Lyon this year and played every match for the Saints. His returns have fluctuated but St Kilda fans love his left foot. Yet the top-ten pick is one of few who hasn’t extended his deal.

James Van Es

Draft pick: 31, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

No debut yet for the key defensive prospect, who has played 14 games in the VFL this year where he has been strong in the air.

Olli Hotton

Draft pick: 35, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A stress fracture in his back derailed Hotton’s pre-season and he has been playing catch-up since. Had 28 disposals in his best VFL game in round 18 against Collingwood.

Anthony Caminiti was a huge signing for St Kilda. Picture: Darrian Traynor/Getty Images
Anthony Caminiti was a huge signing for St Kilda. Picture: Darrian Traynor/Getty Images

Isaac Keeler

Draft pick: 44, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The Saints are excited by Keeler, a 198cm, forward who moves better than his size. He won’t play in the AFL side this year unless something drastic happens but he has a bright future.

Angus McLennan

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The Egyptian-raised defender missed most of this season with a back injury and has only just stepped back into the VFL and played in the last four games.

Anthony Caminiti

Summer supplemental signing, games: 17, contract status: end of 2026

One of the most consequential summer signings in the whole AFL, Caminiti came from the clouds to hold down full forward for the Saints this year. The big man was inked to a new deal in May and has a big future ahead.

Liam Stocker

Summer supplemental signing, games: 19, contract status: end of 2023

Surely due a new deal after playing 18 games so far in his first year at St Kilda – more than he ever played in a year at Carlton.

SYDNEY

Jacob Konstanty

Draft pick: 20, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The exciting small forward battled shin soreness this year and missed out on some VFL time abut he booted six goals across his last two outings.

Cooper Vickery

Draft pick: 27, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Vickery hasn’t played since he picked up a foot injury in mid-June. Running across half-back, he has been a slow developer in his first year.

Caleb Mitchell

Draft pick: 40, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Mitchell snared over 20 disposals in four consecutive games during the middle of the VFL season in his best run of form, but he has battled to find the ball otherwise.

Cameron Owen

Rookie pick: 17, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

The forward-ruck hasn’t troubled the scorers much – four goals in 16 games – and has averaged just 5.3 hitouts a game and 1.9 marks. Plenty of growth left in the young big.

Jaiden Magor

Rookie pick: 31, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

No AFL games for the mid-forward, who has struggled for accuracy at times this year in the VFL, but he has managed to run through the midfield well in the VFL, picking up 50 disposals combined in the last two weeks.

Will Edwards

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A Category B rookie, Edwards had a monster VFL game in round 12 against Sandringham, claiming 12 marks among 22 disposals, a clear highlight this season.

Harry Arnold

Mid-season draft pick: 6, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2023

Has averaged 2.6 intercept marks a game in defence for the Swans so has shown plenty when the ball is in the air and by averaging 4.5 rebound 50s he gets involved offensively and defensively.

Jack Buller

Mid-season draft pick: 15, games: 1, contract status: end of 2024

The Swans handed Buller an AFL debut and a contract extension after he booted five goals on debut for the club’s VFL side. He was subbed off in that AFL game but has kicked a goal in every VFL game he has played, snagging 20 in seven games.

WEST COAST

Reuben Ginbey

Draft pick: 9, games: 17, contract status: end of 2024

Recent hamstring surgery brought an end to Ginbey’s season as the hard-tackling midfielder showed good signs as a tough inside-midfielder. Talks on a contract extension are likely to start before the end of the year.

Elijah Hewett

Draft pick: 14, games: 11, contract status: end of 2024

No extension for Hewett yet either for the highly-rated West Australian. An ankle injury hurt his early part of the season and he has played in West Coast’s last seven games.

Harry Barnett

Draft pick: 23, games: 1, contract status: end of 2024

Just the one appearance at the top level for Barnett in his debut season as the 203cm ruck finds his feet on an AFL list. A six-mark, 24-hitout effort in round 14 against West Perth was his best WAFL outing this year.

Coby Burgiel

Draft pick: 29, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The youngster is out with a hamstring injury and has played just three games at WAFL level this year, where he has averaged 21 touches a game.

Noah Long

Draft pick: 58, games: 16, contract status: end of 2024

A sign of his talent, Long was picked for the Eagles in round 1, before the wheels fell off on the club’s season. Expect him to sort out an extension by the end of the season.

Jordyn Baker

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

A Category B pick-up, Baker was a footnote in West Coast’s nadir this year when he was one of two players available for the WAFL side. Baker has lifted lately and gathered 21 disposals in a good outing against Swan District.

Tyrell Dewar

Academy selection, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Like Baker, Dewar was signed through the academy as a Category B rookie. He has slowly found his feet in the WAFL and had more than 10 disposals just three times in 14 games.

Ryan Maric

Mid-season draft pick: 1, games: 8, contract status: end of 2024

Briefly looked like the hero in round 21 when he put West Coast in front against Essendon, only for the Eagles to let the game slip. The No.1 pick in the mid-season draft, Maric nominated for an 18-month contract so he will be on the Eagles’ list next year. The forward has played eight times at AFL level, showing good signs and booting multiple goals twice.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Jedd Busslinger

Draft pick: 13, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The tall defender hasn’t been needed at the top level by Luke Beveridge and is another high pick yet to ink an extension. He has found enough of the ball running off half-back in the VFL, averaging 15.1 disposals a game.

Charlie Clarke

Draft pick: 21, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

The forward has been left to put in the work across half-forward in the VFL this year but hasn’t been in the frame for senior selection. Showed his best in the last two weeks, gathering 20 disposals against Northern Blues and 19 against North Melbourne.

Harvey Gallagher

Draft pick: 39, games: yet to debut, contract status: end of 2024

Hamstring problems hurt Gallagher early in the season and now his year appears over with glandular fever. He had 29 disposals in his last VFL outing, so has some ball-winning ability.

Oskar Baker

Summer supplemental signing, games: 15, contract status: end of 2025

The former Dee was signed over summer and immediately put on a wing. He has been a valuable contributor and inked a two-year extension in July.

James O’Donnell

Mid-year signing, games: 9, contract status: end of 2024

In typical Luke Beveridge fashion, O’Donnell was signed mid-season and made his debut not long after. The former cricketer has shown good signs as a key position prospect in his opening AFL games.

Caleb Poulter

Mid-season draft pick: 10, games: 6, contract status: End of 2023

Much like O’Donnell, Poulter was thrust into the Dogs’ side a month after he was drafted. The former Collingwood runner has looked at home in playing each of the last six gameson the wing and should return next year.
