COLLINGWOOD should have traded either Jamie Elliott or Alex Fasolo during October’s exchange period, according to Pies premiership captain Tony Shaw.

Both are among four Collingwood players to have undergone surgery during the off-season, with the pair each enduring their own spate of injury problems recently.

Elliott missed a series of matches due to an ankle injury last year, having missed the entire 2016 season with a back problem, while Fasolo missed a host of games in 2016 with a shoulder injury.

Elliott recently underwent more ankle surgery this summer, while Fasolo had shoulder surgery.

Despite the pair combining for 63 goals last season, Shaw believes their injury records should have seen Collingwood consider dealing one of them during the two-week trade window.

“Jamie Elliott, to me, is a star, but he just cannot get on the track,” Shaw told Sportsday.

“(Elliott) and Fasolo, I thought one of them should have gone. I would have traded one of them because this might be your last chance to get something.

“Both of them are injury-prone, so I would have gone with one. It might have been Alex, just to give him a fresh start somewhere else.”

Levi Greenwood underwent knee surgery this week, while captain Scott Pendlebury has also undergone finger surgery earlier in the summer.

But while the injury issues are mounting, Shaw believes it’s another injury-plagued star who could hold the key to the club’s fortunes in season 2018.

“Daniel Wells is the man,” Shaw said.

“If you can get 16 games (out of him) … I think he played nine games and Collingwood won eight.

“He’s the class act they haven’t got at the moment. They haven’t got anyone with his foot skills and his nous.”
