Bulldogs forward torched over unforgivable blunder against Carlton

A Bulldogs forward earned a greasy from a teammate after a costly error that had footy legend Garry Lyon shaking his head.

Bulldogs star butchers teammate's goal

Garry Lyon has given Aaron Naughton some blunt advice after the Bulldogs forward butchered a certain goal in the opening term of his team’s clash with Carlton on Friday night.

Carlton was all over the Dogs in the opening term at Marvel Stadium and Naughton’s stuff up just metres from the goalsquare looked immediately costly.

It takes a serious stuff-up to get Demons legend Lyon upset, but that’s what Naughton managed to do when he cost teammate James Harmes a mark next to the goal posts.

Bulldogs star's embarrassing throw leaves commentators giggling

Ed Richards cleverly found the spot where Naughton and Harmes had a one-man advantage on Blues fullback Jacob Weitering and his kick found Harmes with metres of space around him.

However, instead of attempting to give his teammate some protection, Naughton took a leap at the ball and proceeded to knock his teammate to the ground.

Naughton’s body language showed he knew he had done the wrong thing, but in case he had any doubts, Harmes gave his star forward a greasy while holding his hands up in disbelief.

“Aaron Naughton has to be better than that,” Lyon said on Fox Footy.

“Aaron Naughton had a one-on-one and he had the spare man in front of him. He just had to peel off him.

“When the ball comes in, Naughton has to cover. He has to hold Weitering and Harmes marks that ball uncontested.”

Hawks legend Jason Dunstall also noticed the greasy Harmes flashed his teammate.

“You see the look on James Harmes’ face,” Dunstall said on Fox Footy.

“He’s looking at him like, ‘Mate, I’m on my own. Protect the space’.”

At the other end of the ground, Carlton’s power forward was doing damage.

Charlie Curnow booted three goals in the first half while Naughton walked off at half time with three disposals and three marks.
