Brisbane star Lachie Neale has pulled off what he will hope is the first of two grand final week heists, winning his second Brownlow Medal in four years.

The Lions ball-winner – who finished on 31 votes – delivered a perfect final round to surge away from late-charger Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli (29 votes) and hot medal favourites in Magpie Nick Daicos (28 votes) and Port Adelaide’s Zak Butters (27 votes).

‘Mind-blowing’ votes overshadow thrilling finish

The 2023 Brownlow Medal count is going down to the wire – but that’s not what everyone’s talking about.

First, it was surprise early bolter Lachie Neale who drew the attention of Brownlow watchers online

The 2020 winner raced to 14 votes after round 9 despite some indifferent early season form.

While the Brisbane Lions star – who missed the All-Australian team – had some huge games, one match in particular set social media alight.

In round 6 the Lions claimed a 21-point win against the Giants and Neale was awarded three votes as best on ground after collecting seven kicks and 13 handballs.

In the same game Josh Kelly had 41 disposals, Stephen Coniglio 38 and Lions forward Charlie Cameron kicked 7.2.

Cameron received two votes from the umpires while Daniel Rich received one for his 27 disposal game.

Then it was Jason Horne-Francis polling three votes against Geelong in round 14 for a game in which he finished with 13 disposals, two goals, seven clangers and 41 supercoach points.

In another controversial call, Jack Sinclair failed to poll at all after amassing 37 disposals and two goals against the Giants in round 10.

And some on Twitter questioned if there was a case of mistaken identity when first-year Saint Mattaes Philippou received his first career Brownlow vote for a five-kick game against Carlton in round 6.

Mark of the year

With two huge grabs featuring in the final four, Giant Harry Himmelberg just had to win mark of the year in 2023, with the forward-turned-defender’s hanger on Crows ruckman Reilly O’Brien in the opening round getting the nod.

Daicos explodes out of the blocks

Nick Daicos has begun his Brownlow assault in fine fashion, polling 13 votes to lead the way after round 6.

The big players are Lachie Neale (10) and Christian Petracca (9), both sitting just behind the Collingwood star – ahead of what most predicted at this stage.

Jeremy Cameron can count himself unlucky not to be up with the leaders after a fantastic start to the season.

The gun Cat was particularly unlucky in round 3 against Carlton where a six-goal and 25-dispsoal performance only warranted one vote.
