Sarah Perkins will put goal celebration social media storm behind her as Crows prepare to face Geelong in Round 3 of AFLW

The keyboard warriors were out in force on Sunday following vision of a goal celebration between Sarah ‘Tex’ Perkins and teammate Anne Hatchard which went awry. But Adelaide and the Crows forward says the trolls won’t win.

A funny moment between two Crows AFLW teammates on Sunday has created something of a social media storm.

Vision of Crows forward Sarah ‘Tex’ Perkins celebrating her goal against Carlton was distributed on Facebook and attracted more than 2000 comments — many criticising her body, but a vast proportion supporting her against the trolls — before it was taken down.

The footage showed midfielder Anne Hatchard going up for a chest pump with Perkins to celebrate Perkins’ critical goal in Sunday’s 13-point win over Carlton, but Hatchard fell over as a result.

Hatchard said she went up for the chest pump because it was the usual goal-celebration between Perkins and ruck Rhiannon Metcalfe, but with Metcalfe out for the season after rupturing her ACL in pre-season, she decided to fill the breach.

“I thought I’d step up and try and do the job but I think I let her down a bit with that one,” Hatchard said.

“I went in for the chest bump and unfortunately as I landed, my foot was trod on and I’d gone down and landed on my bum.

“It was all a bit of fun.”

Perkins addressed the social media flurry on Twitter saying:

Cheers @FOXFOOTY for getting my celebration out to the public! Also thank you to the 1,900 people who have commented on it! Just so everyone is aware Hatchy was not slammed to the ground nor was she hurt #keyboardwarriors FOR THE WIN

Adelaide Crows general manager of football operations Phil Harper said the club refused to give the issue any air.

“The bump and the falling over was a source of great mirth among all the girls, they thought it was fantastic,” he said.

“The fact there has been some social media having a go at Sarah is disappointing, but in the end the girls and everyone here have taken it as a bit of joke.

“It was funny, Hatchy’s foot got caught under Sarah’s foot and she fell over and it was all a bit of good fun and I think most people who saw it laughed and thought it was good fun too just like the two people concerned did.

“To start having a go at someone is disappointing, but if you give it air, it will breathe and so we won’t give it any air … it was just a funny thing that happened on the footy field.”

Harper said the club would rally around Perkins and he was confident that she would handle it like a pro.

“She’s a good egg, Sarah, and I think when we come out this weekend to play at Norwood Oval everyone will be behind her because she’s such a good person and has been great for our footy club,” he said.

Hatchard said there was no way the social trolls would put her off doing it again.

“I’ll give it another try and land on my feet this time,” she said.
