LIONS star Sabrina Frederick-Traub believes the Brisbane Lions have the potential to create a lasting legacy as they prepare to go into battle for their second straight AFLW grand final.

Twelve months on from their heartbreaking premiership loss to Adelaide, the Lions will on Saturday seek redemption as they chase their first title against the Western Bulldogs.

But for Frederick-Traub, who has been one of the club’s standout players this season, Saturday also presents her team with the opportunity to make its mark on the history pages of the AFLW.

The dynamic forward was part of last year’s grand final losing team and hasn’t forgotten what it felt like to fall at the final hurdle.

“It felt like someone punched me in the stomach really hard,” she said.

But the off-contract Frederick-Traub has used that pain over the past 12 months to build towards a bigger and better 2018.

And ahead of Saturday’s clash, she has declared herself someone who not only wants to be a Lion for life, but someone who helps build a legacy for Brisbane over the next decade.

“The culture, the people you have around you … we’re like a family,” she said of the Lions.

“We obviously have our highs and lows but they’re my second family and the people I spend the most amount of time with. I can’t really see myself being anywhere else, especially at this point.

“We have an amazing group of girls that could potentially be playing with each other for the next 10 years. We’re a young group, very similar to the (Lions men’s team).

“You just want to be a part of something like that. You want to be part of a legacy. I’ve always wanted to be a one-club player so hopefully that all pans out for me. I love being a Lion.”

Frederick-Traub will use that desire to motivate her, as well as her determination to get the victory for her teammates.

She said last year’s loss is not the reason why she wants to win, but it definitely helped push the team towards back-to-back grand final appearances.

“You’d like to think you learn from the mistakes,” she said.

“The day after the grand final I was feeling absolutely terrible. I actually started my training from scratch.

“I took a different approach and started doing pilates, swimming … that was the very next day. I knew that if we get in this position again, I wasn’t going to have any excuses.

“We’ve had a tough season (with three losses) but it’s helped us rather than be a negative. If we take our moments, work together and play for each other, that’s what motivates us.

“We want to play for the jumper and play for each other.”
