SA teenagers set their sights on AFLW draft spots
TALENTED South Australian sporting teenagers Jessica Allan and Chloe Scheer are auditioning to be drafted into the booming AFLW.
A YEAR ago playing in an AFL Women’s League was just a pipe dream for talented South Australian sporting teenagers Jessica Allan and Chloe Scheer.
Tonight they will be auditioning to be drafted into the second year of a competition that took Australian sport by storm in February and March.
“It’s crazy to see how far the women’s game has come in a short time,’’ said SA under-18 women’s captain Allan, who also is a star basketballer.
“Before this year girls football was a game you played until a certain age and then you had to think about something else you could do with your life. Now it’s become a career opportunity.’’
Allan and Sheer, both 17, headline the Croweaters’ AFLW under-18 championship campaign, which begins at Richmond Oval tonight.
SA will play Tasmania at 6pm today and Northern Territory at Adelaide Oval tomorrow in a curtain-raiser to the men’s AFL match between the Crows and Demons.
Under the new women’s under-18s championships format, SA, Tasmania and the NT are competing in round one of the titles.
An Allies team will be selected from the Tri-Series to compete against two Victorian teams, WA, ACT/NSW and Queensland in round two of the competition on the Gold Coast in July. But from an individual point of view a much bigger picture awaits.
Ruckman Allan, from the Glenelg club, is the younger sister of Adelaide Crows premiership player Sarah Allan and dreams of following in her footsteps.
Scheer, a midfielder from North Adelaide, has already trained with the Crows as a development player.
Both are eligible to be drafted this year and described the opportunity as “a dream’’.
