Daisy Pearce’s hopes of juggling dual roles in 2024 to be decided

Less than two weeks before the start of the AFL season, the respected commentator’s ongoing media gig is still up in the air.

Respected commentator Daisy Pearce’s role helping AFL coverage is under a cloud over her new coaching role in the AFLW.

Pearce, who has been a media trailblazer in the men’s competition and a highly successful player in the women’s, left an assistant role with Geelong to take up the AFLW head coaching position with West Coast for 2024.

The AFL competition begins in less than a fortnight and the role of Pearce, who is keen to continue juggling a role in the media, is yet to be determined, as The Age reports.

“Daisy is settling into her life in Perth with her young family and her new role as West Coast AFLW coach,” Seven’s head of sport Lewis Martin said in a statement.

“Once she’s settled and ready, our 7AFL executive producer, Gary O’Keeffe will continue to work closely with her to finalise her role with Seven’s AFL broadcast.”

Pearce, 35, captained Melbourne in the women’s competition from its commencement in 2017 through to her retirement in 2022, when she led the Demons to the premiership.

Channel 7 rarely broadcasts games in Perth due to the time difference and the station’s preferred broadcasts, leaving Pearce likely to travel the country to call games.

She has proven herself a valuable and insightful commentator and told SEN radio upon her West Coast appointment in December last year she was keen to stay involved in the media.

“If there’s any way that I can stay involved with Channel 7 and the media work around that, I’ll definitely explore it,” she said.

“If I can stay involved, I would love to because the privilege of commentating and working in media isn’t lost on me.

“It’s been awesome and a thrill. But yeah, my commitment and priority now will have to become my team at West Coast.”

Pearce is the Eagles’ fourth senior coach in five seasons in the AFLW competition.

The club is yet to reach the playoffs in five seasons, but Pearce feels the Eagles have huge potential.

“I see it as an incredible opportunity to come over here and work for one of the biggest clubs in the land,” she said upon her appointment last year.

“The talent that is on this list is probably what excited me first and foremost.

“I’ve watched this competition really closely and the Eagles are a team that haven’t performed as they would have liked … but with the talent on the list I think there’s a really exciting future ahead. I was really keen to be a part of it.”

The dates and structure of the 2024 season are still being determined, but it will commence in the last week of August.
