Port star ruled out as AFLW injuries pile up
— Liz Walsh
Port Adelaide’s star key forward Gemma Houghton will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on her right ankle.
The two-time All-Australian, who arrived at Alberton from Fremantle in the off-season, injured her ankle in the second quarter of Saturday’s round 2, 19-point loss to the Western Bulldogs.
According to the club, her ankle became caught underneath her during a tackle, but after treatment on the bench, she played out the game.
Scans on Monday and Tuesday revealing a syndesmosis injury requiring surgery, which was successfully conducted on Tuesday evening.
It’s expected she’ll be sidelined for 5-8 weeks, with optimism she might be back for Port’s round 7 clash against Hawthorn, but Houghton is most likely to miss the historic first Women’s Showdown at the Adelaide Oval on September 30.
It’s devastating news for the 28-year-old, who came to the Power hoping to reignite her footy.
Houghton has previously told The Advertiser that her season six form had been affected by a personal off-field tragedy, which she wanted to now put behind her in season seven.
“I caught myself at training and in games just switched off and I really lost passion and motivation, which is unlike my character, and looking back on the (2022) season, I wish … I was in a better position to help (Fremantle),” she said in June.
“Coming over here is a fresh start … also to get myself back and fall in love with the game again.
“I’m so excited to be a part of this (Port Adelaide) journey and I can’t wait to hit the ground running with the girls and see what we can do in this in our first year.”
Houghton’s football resurgence had already been rewarded when she was voted into the side’s leadership group, alongside captain Erin Phillips, last month.
After Port headed into its round 2 game against the Dogs with an unchanged line-up, coach Lauren Arnell will now be forced to make at least one change, as the side continues the hunt for its inaugural AFLW win.
The loss of Houghton will leave a sizeable hole in the Power’s forward line; the 179cm forward has kicked two goals from two games – including Port’s only major against the Bulldogs on Saturday.
But her absence leaves the door open for the likes of Yasmin Duursma (sister of Power AFL player Xavier) or Tessa Doumanis to make their AFLW debut.
Meanwhile, Gold Coast will be without vice-captain Jamie Stanton for the rest of the season, after the 26-year-old suffered a full rupture of her anterior cruciate ligament in her side’s 33-point win over West Coast on Sunday.
The Suns’ head of women’s football, Fiona Sessarago, said the club would support Stanton through her rehabilitation.
“It’s devastating news for Jamie, who has been an integral part of the club’s AFLW program since our inaugural game,” Sessarago said.
“She’s a much-loved member of this squad and we will all be supporting her throughout her rehabilitation to see her return to the field stronger than ever.”
Stanton’s torn ACL is one of 11 such injuries since pre-season started in June.
The list of torn ACLs includes Brisbane’s Lily Postlethwaite and Bella Smith, Essendon’s Georgia Nanscawen, Greater Western Sydney’s Pepa Randall, West Coast’s Kellie Gibson and Hawthorn’s Tamara Luke.
