AFLW star Moana Hope says every time she kicks a goal she will think of Mick Malthouse and his views on women’s football.
Hope walked out of a sports lunch last month and says the support since has been overwhelming.
“He’s very, very old school and for me AFLW will speak for itself,’’ she said.
“The bigger and better it gets, every goal I kick will not only be an amazing team effort, but bittersweet.
“It wasn’t a stance to get a reaction. I don’t care if people do or don’t agree with me.
“The amount of people who have messaged me, people in the room who have messaged me and parents who have contacted me, that’s for them.”
Hope stormed out after comments by Malthouse about football being a ‘man’s’ game and referred to players wearing skirts if the AFL moved to introduce an 18m goal square.
“He said that AFL was a man’s game and not a woman’s game and he’s said that on stage in front of 50 kids who had just played a boys and girls game of football,” she told the Herald Sun after the incident.
“I left after that I was so disgusted and drove back to Melbourne. He can have an opinion but then there’s just degrading and disrespectful comments,” she said.
The pair were on a football club panel in Ballarat.
Malthouse said Hope’s actions were ‘unprofessional’.
“I make no apologies for having an opinion about women’s football,” he said at the time.
“If Mo Hope hadn’t been looking at her phone or watch she might have listened to what I said in context instead of interpreting something she half heard.”
Hope stepped out with her model fiancee, Isabella Carlstrom, for yesterday’s Caulfield Cup Carnival launch at St Kilda’s Stokehouse.
They became engaged last week.
The couple are ambassadors for the Carnival and spoke of their joy in inspiring others.
“It’s been beautiful and super overwhelming,’’ Hope said.
“The amount of people who have reached out, and we’ve also been bombarded with messages from people saying they’ve felt enabled to follow what they want to do in life.
“We’re normalising it. We didn’t even realise we were doing it. We’re just in love and we’re showing that to each other. It’s very nice to hear such beautiful things.”
Hope said she and Carlstrom wanted to wed soon before starting a family next year.
“We went and looked at a wedding venue for one hour and I was tired,’’ she said.
Carlstrom added: “I was like, we need a wedding planner.”
