Essendon senior coach Brad Scott insists he will not “emotionally blackmail” Mason Redman into staying at Essendon.
The rebounding defender is out-of-contract at the end of the season and the Herald Sun has reported that Adelaide has strong interest in the talented 25-year-old but Scott said he has to “want to stay for the right reasons.”
The comments come after it was reported that Essendon held a presentation which included club legend Simon Madden attending to try and keep Redman at the club.
“He’s (Madden) a famous number 27 and we’d like Redders (Redman) to reach those heights in the jumper 27 like Simon Madden did,” Scott said.
The senior coach pointed out that clubs “often make pitches to players from other clubs but don’t sell the vision to their own.”
“I think that’s a really important part of our responsibility to be really explicit about what it is that we’re building here at the Bombers and what does that look like into the future, and what’s his (Redman) role in that.”
Darcy Parish is also out-of-contract at the end of the season with rivals circling around the star free agent.
“Both Darcy and Mason have big decisions to make individually, and our job is to make sure we sell the vision for our club and I think we’ve done a pretty good job so far on showing them the track that we’re on,” Scott said.
“We’ve still got a heap of improvement and a lot of work to do but I’m not going to go down the path of trying to coerce or emotionally blackmail either of those players into staying at Essendon, they’ve got to want to stay for the right reasons.”
