Adelaide has missed out on bringing Harrison Petty to the club in this year’s trade period, but the door is open for another tilt at him next October. Plus more on Elliott Himmelberg here.

Adelaide is likely done with its player trading, meaning the Harrison Petty pursuit is pushed back another 12 months and Elliott Himmelberg is expected to stay at West Lakes.

The Crows looked to secure Petty from Melbourne as part of the deal for forward Shane McAdam, only for the Demons to knock it back and convince the 23-year-old to stay.

Adelaide list manager Justin Reid told AFL Trade Radio the club was aware that Wudinna-raised Petty had a strong desire to get home to South Australia and would want to at some stage, opening the door for another tilt at him next October.

Reid was coy when asked if the Norwood product, who had two years remaining on his contract, would try to get to the Crows again after the 2024 season.

“I’d like to get through this trade period before we look too far forward,” Reid said.

“Twelve months is a long time in footy.”

Adelaide ultimately traded McAdam for Melbourne’s 2024 second-round selection on Tuesday.

Reid said the Crows dealing for Petty or any other player before the swap period ended on Wednesday night was now highly unlikely.

“The cue’s not in the rack because you’re not sure what comes across your desk late … but I wouldn’t expect too much more over these last 24 hours,” he said.

Petty, who played golf in Adelaide on Tuesday with two Crows - Rostrevor College schoolmate Darcy Fogarty and Mitch Hinge - told Channel 9 it had been tough at times being away from his family.

“It’s sort of my decision and the club’s decision, but the decision’s kind of been made now by Melbourne, which I’m totally fine with,” Petty said.

Asked if putting extension talks on hold indicated he might be looking at returning to Adelaide in the next couple of years, Petty said: “We’ll have to wait and see”.

Reid said Himmelberg was set to stay after Adelaide was unable to bring in Gold Coast’s Mabior Chol as a replacement.

Himmelberg, whose contract ran until the end of 2024, had hoped to join his younger brother, Harry, at GWS.

“We look forward to what Elliott can produce into the future,” Reid said.

Reid said Adelaide, which had selections 10, 14 and 20, would seek to potentially move up the board before next month’s draft.

“We’re in a really strong position with three picks inside round one, but we’re open-minded as well,” he said.

Reid said the Crows, like a lot of clubs, would have to weigh everything up if talks between other clubs fell over and untraded players entered the draft.
