AFL star Ollie Wines spends night in hospital with one of footy’s ‘scariest’ health issues

Reigning Brownlow Medallist Ollie Wines remains in hospital after he felt nauseous and dizzy during the loss to Melbourne on Thursday night.

It has since been confirmed Wines was diagnosed with a heart irregularity.

The midfield star was subbed out of the game at half-time after reporting his condition to club medics.

Wines then spent Thursday night in hospital undergoing tests and remains in “good spirits”.

“He is currently still in hospital with a heart irregularity – the cause of which is undetermined and will be investigated over the coming days,” the club said in a statement.

“Wines remains well and in good spirits.

“A further update will be provided once more information becomes available.”

Wines is not the first AFL player to be diagnosed with a heart irregularity. In 2018, there were two frightening on-field incidents with St Kilda’s Dylan Roberton and Collingwood VFL player Kayle Kirby both collapsing due to irregular heartbeats.

Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer also suffered a heart irregularity during a match while teammate Caleb Marchbank was taken to hospital with an elevated heart rate that same year.

At the time, Richmond premiership star Jack Riewoldt suggested players undergo mandatory heart testing in a bid to avoid the “scary” scenario Roberton faced.

“The vision of him looking blankly into the air with glassy eyes is the scariest thing I reckon I’ve nearly seen on a footy field,” Riewoldt said on AFL360.

“The sad thing is I think it’s more prevalent than what people actually know about. At local football, there’s a really big push to have ... defibrillators at every ground due to heart conditions and undiagnosed murmurs and other issues that can pop up like Dylan’s did on the weekend.”

Wines’ diagnosis comes just weeks after vision of Western Bulldog Hayden Crozier being hooked up to an ECG machine in the change rooms was broadcast nationally when fainted during a match.

Wines isn’t the only injury concern for Port Adelaide from the loss to Melbourne, with ruckman Scott Lycett dislocating his shoulder.

The Power big man went for scans on Friday, with his condition to be monitored.
