AFL Rich 100: The Adelaide and Port Adelaide players who made the list

Crows Matt Crouch and Daniel Talia are among footy’s 100 best-paid players. Neither has played this season and both are out of contract. What are they worth?

Adelaide duo Rory Laird and Reilly O’Brien’s new long term contracts have catapulted them among the game’s highest paid players.

The pair of Crows signed five and four year deals respectively, as part of a mass re-signings of players this year at West Lakes.

Laird, 27, inked his big five-year deal in March – with his $675,000 to $725,000 per season deal placing him at No. 54 in The Advertiser’s top-100 AFL earners this year.

Despite the deal taking him into his early 30s, the Crows were happy to give Laird a five-year deal – so impressive he has been since making the move to a full-time midfielder under Matthew Nicks.

Laird revealed after the new deal had been inked that the Crows initially offered him a three-year contract, but he and his manager countered with a five-year deal.

Drafted as a rookie by the Crows, Laird would have been a free agent this year and his signature was seen as a huge boost for Adelaide as the club rebuilds under Nicks.

A week after Laird’s five-year deal, O’Brien sealed his four-year contract extension.

After a long apprenticeship behind Sam Jacobs, O’Brien made the most of his chance in the Crows senior side in 2019 – inking a two-year deal soon after breaking into the team.

Following winning the Crows Club Champion award last year, that set up O’Brien for a big contract extension this year with his four-years at $575,000 to $625,000 placing him at No. 96 in the league.

Port Adelaide spearhead Charlie Dixon’s new three-year deal inked last year has him also among the game’s best paid players.

Dixon, No. 94, is in the top 100 along with fellow Power teammates Travis Boak (92) and Scott Lycett (75).

Crows duo Matt Crouch (No. 55) and Daniel Talia (No. 81) are out of contract at the end of this season and Adelaide senior coach Matthew Nicks last week said for Talia especially whether he can get back on the field this year will play a part in negotiations over a new deal.

Crouch also hasn’t played this season, and there is significant conjecture about what he is worth after his three-year deal – at $675,000 to $725,000 – is up.

Taylor Walker inked a new one-year extension at the Crows on Thursday.

His previous contract had him at No. 66 among AFL players.
