AFL draft guru Kevin Sheehan reveals and rates the top prospects for 2024

There’s a lot to like about what lies ahead in 2024. And there are several exciting prospects tied to clubs, including twins to a Victorian powerhouse. We reveal the top 25 to watch.

Most players need more than just one good top-age year to be drafted to the AFL ranks.

Recruiters always have an eye on the future and closely monitor the top talent from under-16 – or even earlier.

Like the 2023 crop of players, there is a lot to like about what lies ahead in 2024.

Next year’s top prospects are headlined by Levi Ashcroft, who is the younger brother of last year’s No. 2 draft pick and Brisbane Lions midfielder Will Ashcroft.

Levi played with his brother in a premiership with the Sandringham Dragons as a 16-year-old last season and has continued to show some exciting signs through the midfield this year.

Some suggest that he could be even better than his brother, who earned an AFL Rising Star nomination after collecting 31 disposals in his second senior game.

Levi will be eligible to join Brisbane as a father-son selection, given his father Marcus played 318 games for the club including three premierships.

“I’m really excited to see what Levi can do this year and next year, his top-age year,” Will said when asked about Levi earlier this year.

“He’s only just scratching the surface, I think.

“His ability to (hit the scoreboard) and create chances for himself is something that definitely helps him stand out among the rest. But I think we have a lot of similarities at the same time. We play a similar game through the midfield.”

Levi is not the only father-son prospect coming through next year.

Carlton is closely monitoring twins Lucas and Ben Camporeale, who are both eligible to join the Blues in 2024 as the sons of 233-game club champion Scott Camporeale.

The twins are playing in South Australia where the Camporeale family now lives, but spent a week training with Carlton over the pre-season and are shaping as quality prospects.

The two Adelaide clubs don’t miss out, each having a top father-son prospect of their own.

Tyler Welsh is a mid-sized forward who is eligible to join the Crows, a club for whom his father Scott played 129 AFL games.

Port Adelaide will have access to Rome Burgoyne, who is the son of club champion Peter Burgoyne and younger brother of current Power defender Jase Burgoyne.
