Recruiters have been left with 886 players to pick from in next week’s AFL national draft, with nominations closing today.

An updated list of draft nominations – which has been obtained by the Herald Sun – was circulated to clubs on Monday morning, ahead of the final close of nominations at 3pm.

Sixty recently delisted AFL players have nominated to earn another chance at the top level, including Jared Polec, Jed Anderson, Phil Davis, Paul Seedsman, Sydney Stack, Mitch Wallis, Jake Aarts, Callum Brown, Riley Collier-Dawkins and Nakia Cockatoo.

Controversial former Swan Elijah Taylor has also nominated in the hope of earning an AFL lifeline.

Taylor, 21, parted ways with Sydney in 2020 after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his former girlfriend. The talented forward played for East Perth in the WAFL in 2022, averaging 5.7 disposals and 0.3 goals per game. He also completed education sessions required as part of an agreement with the AFL to remain eligible for future drafts.

“Elijah acknowledges his wrongdoings and with the support of his family he is committed to working towards redeeming himself,’ East Perth board member Kim Farmer said after Taylor signed with the club.

A total of 214 NAB League players have nominated, which is where the bulk of the national draft selections are expected to come from.

There have also been 184 VFL players and 126 SANFL players nominate, along with 125 players from the WAFL.

Recruiters still expect only 50 to 60 players to be selected in the national draft, which will be held across two nights next Monday and Tuesday.

A raft of clubs only intend to select two players, but some clubs plan to make up to four picks.

Greater Western Sydney is expected to select Victorian key forward Aaron Cadman with the No.1 pick, with North Melbourne widely predicted to bid on Brisbane father-son prospect Will Ashcroft at pick 2.

The pre-season draft will be held next Wednesday, followed by the rookie draft later that day.

Clubs have until December 1 to lodge their final lists for 2023, but are then able to add further players over summer during the pre-season supplemental selection period which will provide further opportunities.
