AFL Collingwood v Gold Coast: Darcy Moore suffers knee injury late in Pies’ win over Suns

Collingwood star defender Darcy Moore has taken to social media to share a welcome update to fans amid fears he’s suffered a serious knee injury. So how long is he out?

Collingwood has received the best possible news on star defender Darcy Moore with the newly resigned veteran avoiding ligament damage and likely to play this week.

The Pies had been confident he had avoided an ACL tear but until the results of scans were returned on Monday morning they were still awaiting confirmation.

In an astonishing turnaround Moore has bone bruising and capsule damage to his knee from his hyperextension but has not been ruled out against North Melbourne.

The Pies said on Monday night Moore would skip training on Tuesday but “our high performance team is hopeful he will be available to play this weekend”.

Moore posted his euphoria on social media when he said: There is no structural damage to my knee which is a big #yeet #yeet. Thank you to everyone for the messages of support. It’s truly overwhelming and also much appreciated.”

The Pies expected Jeremy Howe to be available after a gastrointestinal illness if he can train this week.

But in another setback for young first-year defender Charlie Dean he is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a toe injury.

He landed on his ankle in the VFL and suffered ligament damage, with scans also showing his toe had not healed from a previous injury.

The Pies said he would be managed conservatively and could miss as many as two months.

Midfielder Harvey Harrison strained his hamstring in the VFL and will miss up to a month.

Jack Magden played VFL on Sunday in the game against Richmond and while he is no star like Moore he can fill a role in coming weeks.

Moore had only just signed a six-year six million dollar deal and 12 months out of the game would have been a hammer blow for the Pies and coach Craig McRae.

Instead he can dream about a remarkable premiership tilt in his first season after taking a club that finished 17th all the way to the verge of the top four.

Larkins said on Sunday the capsule damage was the likely outcome but knew the Pies would be nervous given it can be hard to diagnose ACL damage when a player hyperextends his knee.

“You can do the ACL or PCL when you have a hyperextension like that. There is always capsule damage with a hyperextension,” he said.

“Clubs always tell porkies about waiting for scans when they do know if there is ACL damage but the hyperextension is a tricky one.

“An ACL can feel loose but it can be hard to know if there is ACL or PCL damage. It’s one of the rare injuries where the doctors aren’t quite sure.

“Even a mild hyperextension can be 3-4 weeks with bone bruising. With a capsule sprain you can play with it strapped up but the scans will be really important for this one.”

The Pies have only a handful of players on their injury list with Brodie Grundy a month away with PCL damage and Nathan Kreuger (shoulder), Reef McInnes (shoulder) and Tom Wilson (back) out for the season.
