AFL 2025: Melbourne star Jack Viney says the Demons are prepared for ‘sharp’ GWS Giants after Opening Round blitz

Melbourne star Jack Viney says the Demons are on high alert after GWS dismantled Collingwood in Opening Round at the weekend.

Cyclone hasn't hampered Lions' training

A fully fit Melbourne star Jack Viney says the Demons are wary of GWS after its “sharp” display in Opening Round.

Viney was impressed by the run and carry of the Finn Callaghan-led Giants as they blitzed Collingwood by 52 points.

Viney doesn’t expect to have a direct role on Callaghan at stoppages but will be doing everything possible to quell his influence.

“They were sharp, for sure, I thought they played a really good game of footy,” Viney said.

“It means we’re going to be training pretty sharp this week, I reckon, because we know they’re in good form.

“I will be playing pretty tight this week to Finn I reckon to try and stop that run and carry.

“He was getting forward and kicking some goals too, he had a terrific game.

“When you see a team function, operate at that level, it really makes you focus and narrow in on your training and performance.

“I can’t wait to be challenged on Sunday.”

Viney was sidelined from some match simulation this pre-season as he recovered from a rib injury sustained at training.

But he says he is back to 100 per cent and itching to tackle the premiership favourites at the MCG on Sunday.

“It was just a little incident at training that was a bit sore for a week, but I am cherry ripe now,” he said.

“I will be 100 per cent on Sunday. I don’t doubt they’ll give it a good test out, I can’t wait. I am good to go.”

Melbourne will wear a special jumper and green socks in the match as they honour club legend Jim Stynes.
