Adelaide has started its off-season axings, cutting four players including ex-GWS midfielder Jackson Hately.

Port Adelaide has also delisted four players as clubs trim their lists for the trade and draft period.

Hately, selected by the Giants with pick 14 in the 2018 national draft, arrived at the Crows ahead of the 2021 campaign seeking more opportunities, but played more SANFL matches (35) than AFL ones (15), including just one in the top tier this year.

A groin injury hampered him two seasons ago and he was stuck in the state league for most of 2023.

The 22-year-old joins former Collingwood on-baller Tyler Brown, luckless defender Andrew McPherson and rookie speedster Tariek Newchurch in not having their contracts renewed.

Brown, 23, signed with the Crows during the supplemental selection period in January to help provide cover for concussion-affected Paul Seedsman and played one AFL match – as the substitute in round 1.

McPherson, 24, featured in 28 games for Adelaide but just one over the past two seasons.

He had a series of injuries, including posterior cruciate ligament surgery last year and a reaggravated quad issue in 2023.

McPherson won the club’s Mark Bickley Emerging Talent Award and Brian Sando Award for professionalism in 2020.

Newchurch, a Next Generation Academy rookie for the past three seasons, did not play an AFL match.

Crows list manager Justin Reid said all four made valuable contributions to the club.

“These are always difficult decisions that unfortunately need to be made at this time of the year,” Reid said.

“All four players leave the club with our thanks and best wishes for the future.”

Seedsman, who retired last month, was Adelaide’s only other list change so far this off-season.

Forward Shane McAdam is seeking a trade to Melbourne.

Port Adelaide has also started its list cull, with four players told they will not be getting contracts for 2024.

Midfielders Riley Bonner and Trent Dumont, ruck Brynn Teakle and utility Nathan Barkla have been informed their contracts will not be renewed for 2024.

Power list manager Jason Cripps said it was hard to say goodbye to the quartet.

“It is difficult to farewell players of such great character who have dedicated themselves to our club,” Cripps said.

“We appreciated the hard work and commitment that Riley, Trent, Brynn and Nathan put in across multiple years with us.

“We wish them every success with their next steps and thank them for everything they have contributed to our club.”

Bonner played 93 games for the Power after being taken with pick 37 at the 2015 draft.

Known for his penetrating left foot off half-back, the 26-year-old was also shifted further up the ground to play on the wing.

Dumont came to Port Adelaide as a delisted free agent at the end of 2021 after he played 113 games for North Melbourne.

The Golden Grove product played eight AFL games in 2022 but was unable to break into the Power’s line-up this season, playing all but one of the club’s SANFL games.

Teakle arrived at the Power after being picked up in the 2022 mid-season draft.

The 23-year-old made his debut just a fortnight after his arrival, but suffered a broken collarbone early in the match.

He played four games in 2023, but his season was limited by a foot injury in the middle of the year.

Barkla came through the Power’s Next Generation Academy and was selected as a Category B rookie last year. He did not play an AFL game for the Power.

Players still unsigned for next year include former captain Travis Boak, veteran ruckman Scott Lycett, Sam Hayes and small forward Orazio Fantasia.
