AFL 2016: Adelaide Crows banner sums up Phil Walsh’s philosophy

IT WAS a tough day for the Adelaide Crows on the one year anniversary of former coach Phil Walsh’s death, but they did their best to honour him.

ADELAIDE’S banner at MCG has formed part of the club’s tribute to former coach Phil Walsh on the first anniversary of his death.

On the front of the banner the players ran through when they entered the MCG was one of Walsh’s favourite sayings “get the job done”, as they prepared to face Melbourne.

Captain Taylor Walker led them onto the ground but the team did not wear black armbands as it did last year in the first game after Walsh’s sudden passing.

The club also commissioned a full page tribute to Walsh in the match-day AFL Record which described him as “a leader with integrity and passion who made a significant contribution to the lives of many in the game of football that he so dearly loved.”

On Saturday the club also unveiled a permanent tribute to Walsh by planting a tree accompanied by a plaque outside of Adelaide Oval.

Chief executive Andrew Fagan wrote to members and supporters on Adelaide’s website this morning and said Walsh left a significant imprint on the club and its thoughts were with his family.

“All of that (football) seems trivial when compared to the ongoing grief endured by many, none more so than that of Phil’s wife Meredith, their family and close friends,” Fagan said.

“Our thoughts and ongoing support are focused on them now and will continue to be in the weeks, months and years ahead.

“It’s at times like these you take a moment to pause and reflect, and I will never forget the wave of support that was provided to the Walsh family and our club from across the nation when it was most needed.

“The football community, and in particular the Crows family came together — board, staff, coaches, players, corporate partners, members and supporters — and while the pain and grief was immense, we emerged galvanised, determined and with a clear focus of where we want to head.

“Walshy was highly regarded for his football knowledge and tactical smarts but it was his leadership qualities which shone from the moment he walked through the doors at West Lakes. He was direct, focused, passionate, engaged and determined. All qualities you want to see in a leader.”
