Officials have confirmed nearly 40 North Queensland records tumbled at Townsville Sports Reserve last week as the region’s finest athletes competed at the 2024 North Queensland Championships.

Townsville’s Zoe Chester, 18, proved why she is considered among the region’s brightest hopes for a Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games tilt by setting North Queensland records in the under-20 women’s long jump and triple jump.

Chester is months away from graduating Year 12 at Brisbane boarding school St Peter’s Lutheran but returned to North Queensland to shatter the district’s under-20 long jump record by 25cm (5.98m) in the final.

She broke the age grade triple jump record with a 12.45m effort in qualifying, topping that record by 37cm.

Townsville sprinter Uwezo Lubenda rewrote the history books by becoming the first 15-year-old in North Queensland athletics history to break the 11 second barrier.

Lubenda, a student at Calvary Christian College, ran 10.80 in the 15 years (U16) 100m final to shave 0.31 seconds off the previous record of 11.11.

Lubenda matched the personal best of Maroons flyer Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow.
