Flinders University has appointed a former student as chancellor for the first time in its history.
In an announcement by the university, economics and accounting graduate John Hood was announced to the role on Wednesday.
Mr Hood will start his tenure on October 1, deputy chancellor of Flinders University Council Douglas Gautier said.
“John Hood is the first Flinders alumnus to be appointed to this important governance role and has already demonstrated his calibre through many years of association with the university,” Mr Gautier said.
“He is an active participant in the South Australian community and respected throughout the state.”
Mr Hood said he was “honoured” to accept the role.
“I have long been proud of the innovation and impact forged by Flinders,” Mr Hood said.
He graduated from Flinders University with a degree in economics in 1983 before attaining a graduate diploma in accounting in 1985.
Mr Hood served on the university’s council for six years from 2004 and then rejoined in 2017.
During Mr Hood’s career he has served in executive roles at business and accounting firms such as PwC and was chief executive of MHM, before it merged with Deloitte in 2010.
Flinders University president and vice-chancellor Professor Colin Stirling hailed Mr Hood’s “important contributions” to the institution.
“I look forward to working closely with him,” Prof Stirling said.
