An Adelaide private school teacher has been charged with child sex offences.

In a letter to parents on Tuesday, the school’s principal revealed one of its teachers had been charged with maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child.

The letter states the alleged offending “related to a former student of the college.”

The principal did not identify the teacher and The Advertiser cannot identify the school or teacher because the accused is yet to appear in court.

The teacher, whose gender has not been revealed, has been suspended while they are before the courts, but it is unclear if they are being paid.

The principal said alternative staffing arrangements had been made and classes “will proceed as normal”.

The college made the disclosures after the teacher was arrested.

“I regret to inform you that a teacher … has been arrested by police and charged with maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child,” the letter said.

“Police are investigating the matter. The teacher has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the police investigation and prosecution.”

The letter reassured parents and caregivers that they did not need to be concerned for the safety of any student at the college and asked parents to “protect the identity of the victim”.

“The teacher has been directed not to attend the school. I will keep you informed of the progress of the prosecution,” it said.

The letter also asked parents and caregivers to contact SA Police if they had any information, and said counselling services were available for students.
