A private school in Adelaide’s inner southwestern suburbs is proposing a multimillion-dollar, state-of-the art classroom upgrade, with an expansive revamp focusing on creativity and wellbeing.

Immanuel Primary School has lodged plans with West Torrens Council to build a new two-storey educational building on its school premises at Novar Gardens.

The ‘Aspire Centre’ would feature new “innovation educational spaces” across both floors, creating specialised shared spaces for all primary school students.

The ground floor would showcase a learning hub, sports store, a foyer with a cafe, an open-space learning room with soapboxes, learning pod room, three studio spaces, a sensory pod and a covered courtyard.

Upstairs rooms would boost a creative deck, imagination maker-space room and a discovery room, a sensory pods, two more pod rooms, three studios, and another open-space room with soapboxes.

Principal Bec Clements said the centre was expected to enhance the school’s STEAM focus, support student wellbeing and learning, and create more inclusivity.

“It will provide flexible and inspiring spaces designed to ignite curiosity, support creative thinking, and encourage exploration,” Ms Clements said.

The outside area would feature two new handball courts and fresh landscaping, a revamped eastern staff carpark and raised vegetable gardens beds.

The existing single-storey multipurpose classroom would be demolished to make way for the Aspire Centre, which will sit across from the school’s large oval and next to the existing year 3 to 4 two-storey classroom.

Two northern hard-play courts, some of the eastern staff carpark, various perimeter canopies and covered ways would also be demolished to make room.

A temporary classroom will be installed and used as an art/media centre for about two years, then removed once the new centre has opened.

The upgrades are designed to support education for the current number of students, instead of increasing capacity at the school.

Immanuel Primary School is a Lutheran school that charges $10,680 annually for a single student.

“Immanuel Primary School is confident in its ability to deliver a state-of-the-art learning environment that will benefit students for generations to come,” Ms Clements said.

If approved, demolitions and construction would start in October with the centre expected to officially open in early 2027.

Public consultation closes on Monday, June 16.
