Aspiring politician Denzel James wants to expand Adelaide to further build up its business sector and population.
The 18-year-old from Avenues College is among applicants for The Advertiser’s Teen Parliament 2024.
Entrants will be in the running to become one of 30 students representing the youth of SA at Parliament House on March 8.
To apply, students from Years 10-12 need to submit a big idea to improve our state using the form below. In Denzel’s case, his idea is to introduce legislation to allow for an increase in the heights of skyscrapers within the CBD “so Adelaide can start to expand into a big city like Melbourne and Sydney”.
Year 12 student Denzel said this “one small change” would encourage the future expansion of Adelaide, and increase the population of the CBD to “allow businesses to become larger and hire more staff”.
“It would be a massive investment and infrastructure change for the city,” Denzel, from Modbury, said.
He has also proposed an expansion of Adelaide Oval.
“If Adelaide Oval were to get redeveloped and more stands were to get added, it would add more of a tourism attraction,” Denzel said.
The young political hopeful already has experience speaking with changemakers as in December last year he attended a UNICEF climate conference in Dubai.
Denzel said Teen Parliament would “help me gain skills” for his future aspirations to be a politician.
“It would give me a once in a lifetime experience which would be super exciting,” he said.
After school, he hopes to study politics at Australian National University.
Applicants from Years 10, 11 and 12 have one more week to submit their ideas relating to topics such as state development, the economy and social issues.
Applications close on February 22.
For the 2024 event, there will be more scholarships awarded to standout students with 10 of the Teen Parliament cohort each receiving $10,000.
