A private school in Adelaide’s north has unveiled multimillion-dollar plans for a new gym and outdoor sports court complex.

Bethany Christian School would build a new 9m-high indoor gymnasium and associated specialised learning areas at its Paralowie Campus.

The development includes two sports courts, one larger 800sq m inside the gym and one smaller outside undercover

It also includes a ‘movement room’ for dance lessons and gallery among its multi-purpose specialised sports learning areas, and offices and storage.

The gym would be largely built over existing outdoor hard-play courts.

The school, which shares a boundary with Temple Christian College, has 536 students.

The gym is the final phase of the school’s 2013-2023 masterplan.

The planning documents say the courts would be designed for netball, basketball, bouldering and indoor soccer and other usual sporting activities to enhance student co-ordination.

Other areas would be set aside for yoga, dance and the site project includes a large foyer and spaces for parent-teacher meetings.

The architects are proposing soundproofing panels for the gym to reduce the noise of sports games.

The school is also building a new, unfenced outdoor basketball/netball court on the other side of the oval.

The documents say that while the gym will be a new building on the existing school site, the use of the site will not change.

“Fundamentally this project will replace two outdated, outdoor sports courts with two new all-weather courts (one indoor and one undercover outdoor),” they say.

“It is expected that pedestrian and vehicle traffic will not change, and the traffic flow will not be increased during peak school times.”

The plans are open for public consulation until November 15.
