Dream homes topping buyers' searches

Despite increasing cost-of-living pressures and a barrage of interest rate rises, demand for premium new homes is just as strong as ever, SA’s prestige builders say.

Sales and marketing manager for Alan Sheppard Construction Helen Papas said the company was still getting a solid level of inquiry from hopeful buyers.

“That demand is always there – most of our builds are $1.5m to more than $1.8m and there’s no change in demand there at all, but anything under that and there has been a slowdown because they’re still looking to get finance and banks are making that a bit more difficult,” she said.

Ms Papas said there was still plenty of confidence in the market that investing in property in South Australia was a sensible thing to do.

“We’re still relatively cheap compared to the eastern states – expats and those on the eastern seaboard see that they can get great value for money here,” she said.

Rising building costs were not a barrier to top-end buyers, Ms Papas said, but she did highlight one area of concern.

“I think turnaround times can be a big determining factor – our turnaround times might have increased by two months, but not six or seven months.”

Scott Salisbury Homes managing director Scott Salisbury said buyers at the top end of the market seemed undeterred by the current economic climate.

“We are finding people are now more than ever wanting to invest in quality, confidence and security given the current building market,” he said.

Mr Salisbury said supply-chain issues continued to hamper activity, but that the industry was forging ahead.
