Reality television shows depicting the lavish, fast-paced lifestyles of successful real estate agents are luring young people into the profession, one agent says – and technology will be the key to a successful career.
Crawford Doran sales director Thomas Crawford said agents who refuse to embrace technology risk falling behind in an industry racing into the future.
“What clients are hoping to get out of you, and the speed that they want it from you is dependent on technology,” he said.
“Technology is crucial to being able to do your job quicker, smarter and better.”
This adaptation to modern technology, Mr Crawford says, has typically been associated with the younger generation, who now find themselves drawn to the industry and see it as a viable career option.
“There’s some brilliant talent out there,” Mr Crawford says.
“Some of these young people are so determined – they’ve seen success out of agents in the industry, they see the cars they’re driving and the houses that they’re living in and they’re extremely motivated to succeed.
“I’m getting a lot more calls from students that are in the last year of school wanting to talk to me about what’s involved.
“It’s a great way to make some serious money – more money than what you typically expect a very well educated university postgraduate to be able to secure.”
It’s not going to happen overnight though, Mr Crawford adds.
“I think it wasn’t until I was probably in my fifth year of selling real estate that I started to make some decent coin, and prior to that I’d have been making more money at McDonald’s – and probably a hell of a lot more if you worked it out by the hour,” he said.
“But it’s a great industry and one you can carve out a successful career in if you’re motivated.”
Mr Crawford has been revealed in as SA’s top-selling residential real estate agent under 35 in The Advertiser’s 2024 Real Estate Young Guns, selling more than $164m worth of property in the past financial year.
In compiling our list of 50 real estate young guns, we reached out to SA’s largest agencies to uncover their star performers and have ranked them by total value of sales for the 2023/34 financial year.
Ray White’s Tahlia Gabrielli – who sells in Mount Gambier – was the 16th highest seller, selling $67.7m worth of homes.
She said now was a great time for an up-and-coming agent to prove their chops.
“Having worked in different-speed markets now, I think this is a great market to be in, to learn to be a good agent and be able to service your clients in the best possible way,” she said.
“Because at the moment you do have to do the work and I think that’s why you get paid – to do a good job, provide a good service and get a good outcome for all involved – and I think a harder market is where the quality shows.”
