A young Gold Coast man from a good family was raided by cops and found in possession of nine heat-sealed bags of cocaine and $26,000 cash, and had pocketed $1000 from a drug deal, a court has heard.

Coombabah man Zakariyah Ismail Abdul Kadir, 24, appeared in Brisbane Supreme Court on February 14 – Justice Lincoln Crowley’s sentencing remarks were not published until June 4 – where he pleaded guilty to five offences.

He admitted to supplying cocaine, possessing cocaine in excess of 2g, contravening an order to provide the passcode to a device, possessing a thing used in the commission of crime, and possessing cash suspected of being the proceeds of a drug offence.

All offences were detected after police raided Abdul Kadir’s residence on November 9, 2023.

According to Justice Crowley, inside Abdul Kadir’s room was discovered a Woolworths bag containing nine heat-sealed bags of a white powder, eight of which were labelled by weight.

Analysis of the substance revealed 112.8g of pure cocaine within 152g of substance.

Abdul Kadir was also found in possession of $26,850 cash, as well as drug paraphernalia such as scales, a heat sealer, and clip-seal bags, and two mobile phones.

He denied knowledge of one of the phones, the court heard, and declined to provide its passcode, but police were able to gain access to the device, which revealed Abdul Kadir had supplied a ‘ball’ of cocaine – 3.5g – at the behest of an associate.

In return, Abdul Kadir was able to pocket the $1000 sale price.

Justice Crowley said the court accepted the drugs were for a commercial purpose, but they were not Abdul Kadir’s – he was effectively the “storeman”.

“And I do accept, to an extent, there is naivety involved in what you have done,” the judge added.

“It was put on your behalf that you are not a very assertive person, you are a meek individual, and that you are the sort of person that might be used by others to shift the risk from them to you, in terms of storing dangerous drugs.”

The court heard Abdul Kadir, one of six siblings born and raised on the Gold Coast by parents of Indian-Indonesian descent, suffered from anxiety and depression, and had undertaken counselling.

After graduating year 12, he achieved a Certificate III in Business, and has worked as a gardener, a janitor, a kitchen hand, and in logistics.

Justice Crowley sentenced Abdul Kadir to five years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for an operational period of five years.

However, Abdul Kadir is not out of the woods yet – court records show he is due back before the Brisbane Supreme Court later this month on June 23, where he is expected to plead guilty to seven charges including trafficking in dangerous drugs and unlawfully supplying category D/H/R weapons.

No pleas have yet been entered to those charges.
