Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria has led the exodus from the “dystopian” United States after Donald Trump won complete control over both the White House and Washington DC.
The outspoken Kamala Harris supporter revealed that she uprooted her family from Los Angeles to start a new life in Mexico and Spain.
“If he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place,” she told Marie Claire.
“I had my whole adult life here. But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to s**t on California -it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”
Less than 24 hours after Mr Trump was announced as the next president, Ms Longoria confirmed she would no longer live in the country with her husband José Bastón, and their son Santiago, 6.
Ms Longoria, who spoke at the Democratic National Convention, is one of the dozens of celebrities who endorsed Ms Harris and are now coming under further scrutiny for massive appearance fees.
It was claimed that the Harris campaign paid about $20 million to celebrities ahead of their high-profile support, including $10 million to Beyonce, $5 million to Megan Thee Stallion, $3 million to Lizzo, $1.8 million to Eminem and $1 million Oprah.
Ms Longoria, who was not named among the celebrity recipients of campaign cash in the reports by Fox News and The Washington Examiner, led “She se puede” chants for Ms Harris’ nomination in a Spanish riff on Barack Obama’s “Yes we can”.
A little over 100 days later, it turns out that she couldn’t.
“The shocking part is not that he won. It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office,” she said.
“I would like to think our fight continues,” she says, before adding: “I’m privileged. I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them.”
TRUMP WINS TOTAL CONTROL
Donald Trump won total control in Washington DC on the day he returned to the Oval Office, only to immediately put his power to the test with controversial appointments to his new administration.
A week after his election victory, the President-elect met President Joe Biden to discuss the transition and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and then received a further boost when the Republican Party clinched a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
But in the Senate, where the Republicans will also hold sway, party members refused to vote for a new leader who was preferred by Mr Trump’s surrogates including Elon Musk.
Several senators then suggested the chamber could refuse to confirm the President-elect’s bombshell choice of Florida congressman Matt Gaetz to be his Attorney General.
The shock nomination came as Mr Trump tapped Florida senator Marco Rubio to be his Secretary of State, ex-Democrat Tulsi Gabbard to be his Director of National Intelligence and Dan Scavino to be his deputy chief of staff, a day after the adviser suggested in a social media post that Kevin Rudd’s time as Australia’s ambassador to the US was running out.
ELON MUSK COZY WITH DONALD TRUMP
Donald Trump’s bond with Elon Musk has come to the fore during the election campaign, with their cosy relationship irking members of the president-elect’s inner circle, a source told celebrity publication Page Six.
The billionaire techie was present at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago election viewing party, and reportedly sat in on calls with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. He also attended a national security meeting, and reportedly weighed in on candidates for administrative positions.
The new bond is “making a lot of Trump’s inner circle feel iced out”, according to a Mar-a-Lago source.
“He’s always with Elon,” they said. “It’s 24/7. Trump’s inner circle is getting smaller. He has dumped some others,” in favour of hanging with the SpaceX founder.
JOE ROGAN DROPS HARRIS INTERVIEW REVELATION
Joe Rogan claimed the Harris-Walz campaign refused to talk about “marijuana legalisation” over fears of progressive backlash, the New York Post reported.
“I think they had requirements on things that she didn’t want to talk about. She didn’t want to talk about marijuana legalisation, which I thought was hilarious,” the popular podcaster revealed on his Tuesday episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
The Harris-Walz campaign had reached out to Rogan’s management about doing an interview with him after it broke that President-elect Donald Trump would go on the podcast, according to Rogan.
But plans fell through, with negotiations with Rogan revealing that some staffers on Harris’ team were wary that an appearance on the podcast could stoke progressive backlash.
“Because of her prosecuting record,” Rogan mused about Vice President Kamala Harris, who formerly served as California attorney general and San Francisco district attorney. “She put a lot of people in jail for weed.”
‘WELCOME BACK’: TRUMP, BIDEN MEET
The President-elect met with Mr Biden 1393 days after he left the White House, having refused to concede defeat and extend the same courtesy to his successor at the time.
The President congratulated him on his victory and offered to “do everything we can to make sure you’re accommodated”, as he shook hands with his rival and said: “Welcome back.”
“Politics is tough and it’s in many cases not a very nice world, but it is a nice world today … The transition will be so smooth – it will be as smooth as it can get,” Mr Trump replied.
While his wife Melania rejected a White House invitation from First Lady Jill Biden, Mr Trump told The New York Post that he and Mr Biden had “a really good meeting”.
MIKE JOHNSON WON’T SEND MORE MILITARY AID TO UKRAINE: REPORTS
Mr Trump said the President was “very gracious” in sharing his views on the wars raging overseas, moments after Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly told his members he would not send any more military aid to Ukraine.
Mr Johnson welcomed Mr Trump to a party meeting as “the comeback king”.
As he prepared for his second and final term in power, the President-elect joked: “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘he’s so good we’ve got to figure something else out’.’”
TRUMP PUTS FORWARD GAETZ TO HEAD JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
Senate Republicans met separately to choose South Dakota’s John Thune to lead them, snubbing Florida’s Rick Scott who was heavily backed by Mr Trump’s supporters.
Their willingness to back the President-elect’s agenda will soon be put to the test after Mr Trump’s decision to put forward Mr Gaetz to lead the Department of Justice, which investigated him last year over allegations of sex trafficking.
The congressman also led a coup against former Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who accused him of moving against him because of a congressional ethics committee probe – which is still ongoing – over allegations including sexual misconduct and illicit drug use.
Mr Gaetz has consistently denied the claims.
But Republican senators suggested he could struggle to be approved, with Susan Collins saying she was “shocked” by his nomination, Lisa Murkowski declaring he was “not a serious candidate”, and Joni Ernst adding: “He’s got his work cut out for him.”
Mr Trump backed Mr Gaetz to “root out the systemic corruption” in the department, which the pair have consistently attacked over the criminal charges it laid against the former president.
It came as special counsel Jack Smith – who spearheaded those cases – moved to resign before Mr Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
